Understanding Yourself.

Whatever you believe about yourself is what people will believe about you but do we have a positive belief about ourselves? If a rat thinks itself to be a cat and goes to the house of the cat to play, what do you think will be the rat’s story? I am moved within my spirit to write this article because there is a serious disconnection going on currently in our societies between the physical and the mental being. This disconnection has been caused by the fact that people do not believe or have an understanding of who they are therefore this leaves them open to acceptance of external description of themselves whether true or false. When a baby is born, he is born with his very own unique abilities and gifts which will be made manifest at the appropriate time but due to the negative effect of social media, people end up believing what others describe them to be.

A young who left home for school is at the risk of becoming not what she was meant to be but what society and peer groups want her to be. This is evident in the way and manner people adopt a certain fashion whether it is going or not but because society gives it a thumbs up, such fashion will gradually become the dream of everyone most especially the young people. Can you imagine a cook who had in mind to cook white rice and egg sauce and as she was leaving for the market she per boiled the white rice and decided to go buy some missing ingredient in the house but as soon as she gets to the market, the first seller she meets tells her that she does not have eggs and instead of the cook who has already per boiled rice and has made plans to prepare white rice and egg sauce to go to another seller or shop to look for eggs, she decided to cancel her initial plans and decides to make soup instead. What do you think will happen to the per boiled rice?

A lot of us live our lives like the cook we forfeit all the potential that was deposited in us by our creator and begin to chase after other people dreams all in the name of trying to follow the trend. Do you understand yourself or are you living by other people’s description of you? This is the most important question we must ask ourselves in life because we only have one shot at life and if we miss using those potentials and gifts deposited in us by our creator, we will end up living an unaccomplished life. How can you understand yourself if you don’t listen to yourself? This is where the biggest challenge lies. A lot of us only think and see life to be a place where we have come to life as we want. This makes it so hard for us to look inward by trying to study and understand ourselves first before any other thing.

We are either chasing after the ephemeral things of the world forgetting that what we carry individually is enough and sufficient to make us successful in any field of endeavour we find ourselves. Greatest of all men are those who have taken time to understand their purpose in life not from the perspective of others but their inner being and this has made them great in all they do. Don’t forget that a king is not born and not made therefore if you were born a king and you end up allowing others to make you believe that you are a servant then you have ended up not finding your purpose in life. The moment you have reached the level of understanding as a human being try as much as possible to know yourself not from other people’s point of view but from what and how you have been made.

This is the greatest evil bedevilling our society today and it is more rampant in our youths because they have become so prone to living the life of others especially those they call celebrity. This is not in any way removing the fact that we have role models who we are meant to emulate as humans. The truth is you can only emulate a role model but you can be your role model. Take for instance the pop star late Michael Jackson we all can attest to the fact that he had a lot of young stars who saw him as their role model and this made these young stars go into learning all his dance steps and moves but since he died, has any one of them been able to replace Michael Jackson. You and I know the answer better.

We can only try to follow the footsteps of someone who we see as our role model but we can never be or replace them. This is a clarion call for our youths to understand that each one of us has great potential and gift which was given to us by our creator from birth and it is this gift that will open doors for us now and then but the problem is that we have not understood ourselves to know what and how to make use of our gifts rather we are always busy believing in other people’s definition of who we are and what we are capable of doing. Take a minute of your time and think to understand if you are living your dreams or are you just in another person’s dream world hoping to get back into yours soon. Don’t forget that we have just one shot to life and every second and minute count. Think about yourself and I wish to see you living out your dreams and being who you are meant to be and not what society wants you to be. Please stay safe, I love you all.
