4 days off! Next Monday is a religious holiday, Whitsuntide (Pfingsten), but atheists also have the day off. We are planning a longer hike, but still have to find the right time between the announced thunderstorms. Sunday could be the right day. Finally out of the city and into the forest.

Back from the hike and well exhausted. There were too many metres of altitude for my liking, but what else can you do for your health? Nature also had some small highlights to offer, like this nursery. Many tadpoles, (presumably) guarded by their mother. When I came closer, the guardian moved to a nearby stone. More of this in the next few days, when I have processed all the impressions.

Not all photo motifs are always beautiful at first sight. Some even bring a certain creepiness, like these cellar entrances on an abandoned property. The little tricycle is striking. Where might the owner be?

Lesson learned! For some stupid reason I thought that harvesting was automatic when you pull the LP from a Benswap Ranch. Unfortunately, as I have just discovered, this is not so. So the harvest of the last 2 months is gone. Always remember: First harvest, then remove the LP!

No time for my own photos today but my parents sent some pictures. They had a visit from a cheeky and apparently not at all shy blue tit (Blaumeise). They belong to the common species with about 4 million breeding pairs in Germany. Here we see a female. Males have a black stripe on their belly.

My son and I have just come back from a little walk in an old piece of green in the middle of the city. 13 hectares of unbuilt old land between residential areas. A now overgrown cultivated landscape, used for agriculture since the Middle Ages. Officially closed off, but I'm not interested in the ban. For a little picnic and some frisbee, there is no better place nearby. Beautiful meadows, old trees, forest paths and peace. It's just stupid that investors want to build there…

Seed bombs My son gave me these homemade seed bombs for Father's Day. Yesterday I put them in the ground, together with a portion of spent grains from a brewer friend as fertiliser. It smells like a pigsty but I hope it will give the flowers a good start.

Our country introduced a 9€-ticket at the beginning of the month, which allows you to use all regional trains in the country for one month. So today I decided to take my son home by train. Throw seeds, not bombs! Just two days after I dropped the seed bombs on the fertile soil, the first seedlings shoot out of the ground. Please forgive this "special military operations" rhetoric. Sometimes I am just tactless. But I am happy that new life is emerging. I have already counted a total of 8 sprouts. Soon the whole window will be full of flowers. A beautiful gift from my son, it will delight me all summer long.

The Rhino Beetles are coming! It's that time again, the Rhino Beetles are back. I'm always happy when these little guys show up. The cat has been visiting us at work for the last few days and she seems to have made friends with the beetles. She played with the beetle, but didn't hurt or eat it. Everything completely relaxed. No animals were harmed during this photo shoot.

In our city, sensible alternatives for private transport are slowly but surely being created. For some time now, there have been MobiBikes, which can be used free of charge for half an hour with a monthly ticket for public transport. Natural mosquito trap. The mosquito lands on the salt and thinks it is sugar. It therefore gets thirsty and looks for water. But there is rum in the lid. I don't want to start talking about climate change again, but what's going on here right now must be connected to it somehow. Yesterday we had 39°C and bright sunshine, today it's 19°C and raining. I'm beginning to not know what to wear in the morning anymore. Strange summer.

My colleague brought a HUGE bucket of cherries to work today, his own harvest. And when I say huge, I mean it. At least 500 square ounces, if not more. That's about 10kg. Now the big question: What would you do with this amount of cherries before they spoil? Do you have any good, local ideas? Eating is one solution but we won't be able to do that.

In the meantime, my little forest has become a real jungle. The flowers from the seed bombs are developing beautifully. Maybe there are too many for the small pot, but I won't interfere. They'll sort it out among themselves.

Who can tell me what this is? It was made overnight in a towel that was hanging outside to dry. It's tiny and made of some kind of clay, so I suspect it's not a wasp nest. Have you seen this before?

In the meantime, I have been able to solve the puzzle, or rather, a colleague has been able to solve it. What we see here is the construction of a potter wasp. To be more precise, it is either the Oriental Mason Wasp (Sceliphron curvatum) or the Yellow and Black Mason Wasp (Sceliphron caementarium). Tonight a large storage hall of a recycling yard burnt down near here. The fire is now under control but it is still burning in some places. We are told to keep the windows closed and I think it is better that way. This morning I was "airing out" and smelled the smoke. Breathing is also more difficult than usual. Hopefully the announced rain will come soon and help with the firefighting work.

A moment of fire. Rare footage of a brewing kettle being moved. We took this kettle out of the brewery yesterday to move it to its new location. Unfortunately it was too big for all the doors or windows of the brewery and we had to cut off part of the stand. In the end, it landed well outside and can soon be moved to its new place.
