Protect your Heart

Proverbs 4:23

23 Keep your heart with all vigilance;

for from it flow the springs of life.

Today's verse reminds us of the importance of keeping our hearts safe. People like to think that they operate according to logic and willpower. However, very few sages have the ability to live according to that manifesto. In fact, most of us are moved by the whims of our hearts and desires. And, what's wrong with that?

Well, nothing is wrong with it...if our hearts are healthy and our desires are reasonable. If we truly desire to walk with the Lord and follow His laws, then our heart is a perfect guide. Every action and thought ideally would be directed by our love of Him and our desire to praise and glorify Him.

However, if our heart is corrupted by the material world and sin, then our compass might lead us astray and into the realm of material wants. Then it would be a good idea to set up ridged rules to focus our willpower not to give into sins.

Ultimately, it is to our benefit to love the Lord with our heart, mind, and soul. It makes like easier in the long run. If we screw up, we also have the safety net of the Lord's love.
