Need Spirit?
“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
S. Matthew 5:3 RV1895 https://bible.com/bible/1922/mat.5.3.RV1895
This verse always stuck me as strange when I was young. I feel a lot of this comes from the way we teach biblical stories. Usually the version children taught are kind of candy coated and beautiful. By this, I mean, everything looks and sounds good. Everything is clean and nice. So we are taught that we should be the same—which is a good idea, but…
A lot of the Bible deals with brokenness. Put yourself in the life of anyone in the Bible, and they are not perfect, Jesus not included. No one has a perfect life. They are full of doubt and all kinds of problems.
Look at Moses. God gets closer to him. Gives him an order, and Moses didn’t have the confidence of faith in the Lord to go through with it. So God gives him the miracles to show the people that God of Abraham and Israel is with him. He still didn’t want to do it. He feels he can’t speak well. Remember, he was raised as son of a pharaoh, so I wonder if this was an excuse. But you get my drift.
Now that I’m older, it makes me sense. When you lack something, it’s easier to appreciate it when you have it. Any meal is delicious when your starving. The more you need the Lord, the greater the intimacy when you find Him.
Next time you are at the end of your rope, remember this verse and be joyous. This is because when the Lord you find the Lord, it will be glorious. Being broken or not perfect is nothing to be ashamed of. God takes broken things and makes masterpieces out of them.
