We are commonly told to be ourselves, but when thinking about it, we seldom do it. I'll go even further than that. I'll bet most people dislike being themselves so much, that it's easier to run away from that concept than to attempt to be yourself.
The term "be yourself" is sometimes used by others to get you to do something that you don't naturally want to do.
Okay, so who am I, who are you? Good question, right. Do we really know who we are and when we want or do we live in an illusion that we purposely choose to live?
So what is the goal of our life? Do you live with the goal of being yourself? Or do you live with the goal of escaping who you are? Look at the attraction of drug use in the world (alcohol included). Do people get high and drunk to amplify who they are? Most people I know say it's to escape. How about you. Let look at the other substances, chocolate, coffee, or other pleasure goodies? Not everyone, but many use them as a way of escaping instead of dealing with who they are.
Social media is another source of escape. Most people get so enveloped in social media that there is no escape from it. It becomes such a part of their life that they are no longer really who they were. This creates such a desire to be someone different from their original soul that they desire to be like other people who they envy.
How about free time? Most people find ways to escape the world. We have movies, bing watching, video games, and other ways to waste time that doesn't add to our experience of life.
Now, what does it mean to be yourself? You need to decide this for yourself. What is the purpose of your life? Have you found yourself?
