Why Venezuela? Crisis Reasons.
Venezuela suffers from serious political, economic and social problems that, unfortunately, have been deteriorating in recent years. Poor economic policies and legal insecurity have been coupled with a decline in oil prices and production. In 2013, it pumped 3.2 million barrels per day, compared to 1.17 million last December. The consequence is that their productive capacity is being drastically reduced. This contraction in supply, together with the high public deficit, is collapsing the economy and generating hyperinflation that, foreseeably, will continue to increase this year with four-digit levels.
It is curious that, while the Latin American economy is recovering, Venezuela is sinking more and more. As the IMF published this week, Latin America is the only region in the world that, during 2019, will have greater economic growth than in 2018. Indeed, the GDP of Latin America could rise 2% this year, from 1.1% of the past. Some of these countries will experience very positive increases, in the case of Peru (3.5%), Chile (3.5%), Colombia (3%) and Brazil (2.5%). Others will be weaker, like Mexico (2%), largely due to the typical economic slowdown in the first year of a new government. In the caboose, with negative growths, are Argentina (1.6%), and of course, Venezuela (6%).
In 2017, the economy of the latter country collapsed (14%). In 2018, with the reduction in the price of oil, the fall in GDP was even greater (18%). This means that, in three years (2017-2019), its GDP will have suffered a collapse of 40%. How is this strong deterioration possible if its geographical situation is excellent, and its temperate climate should favor economic development?
