Yesterday, Unilever (a major brand in consumer goods) initiated a step to fight climate change using blockchain.
Unilever ltd, a multi-national consumer goods based companed (headquatered- London) unveiled a $1 Billion plan to combat climate change on 15th June 2020. The major breakthrough of this plan is use of blockchain technology.
Company has set out a new measure and commitment to improve the health of our planet earth and climate change. This includes protect and regenerate nature and at the same preserve resources for future generations. It also hope that it will achieve net zero emission from all there products by 2039.
It is a collaborative project of different entities. That includes empowering farmers, and working with new generation farmers and smallholders, working with different governments in related sectors, and other organisations that help them to achieve access to water in water scarcity area or drought prone zone.
Fighting the climate crisis:
Unilever plans to achieve net zero carbon emission by 2039 i.e. 11 years ahead of Paris agreement deadline (2050) from the company whole operations and halving the GHG (greenhouse gas) footprint of products across different value chain by 2030.
Protecting and regenerating nature:
It hopes to achieve 'deforestation free-supply chain' by 2023. For achieving this target company will use different tools or technologies such as satellite monitoring, geolocation tracking and blockchain.
Considering the recent agreement done by different governments at global level in the form of Paris Agreement, this initiative will immensely benefit and set out roadmap for different companies to collaborate and reduce effect of climate change. At the end, it is the fact that large business corporation entities are also responsible for climate crisis for the sake of profit generating model as were used by them.
It is a good initiative from my perspective because this is the first time that Large Corporation are using blockchain to fight natural disaster such as climate change, floods, water crisis etc. This will help further development and adoption of blockchain technology.
I hope this kind of initiative will also follow by other Multi National Entities and protect our mother earth.
