🗞 Bitcoin’s Options Market Retains Long-Term Bull Bias Despite Sluggish Price
Longer-term sentiment in bitcoin’s (BTC) options market remains bullish even as the the cryptocurrency struggles to claw its way back to $11,000.
Bitcoin's six-month put-call skew, which measures the cost of put options (bearish bets) expiring in six months relative to calls (bullish bets), is currently seen at close to -11%, according to data source Skew.
In other words, demand for call options expiring in six months is outstripping demand for puts.
The three-month skew is also leaning bullish at -5%.
🗞 UK's FCA bans retail crypto derivatives after year-long consideration
In a landmark decision issued on Tuesday by the United Kingdom’s Financial Conduct Authority, companies in the country will no longer be able to offer cryptocurrency derivatives products such as futures, options and exchange-traded notes, or ETNs, to retail customers.
The decision comes almost exactly one year after the regulator first proposed banning these products. In a statement released by the FCA, the regulator claimed that cryptocurrency derivatives are “ill-suited for retail consumers due to the harm they pose.”
“This ban reflects how seriously we view the potential harm to retail consumers in these products. Consumer protection is paramount here.”
Several reasons are provided for more detail, including concerns that they have “no reliable basis for valuation,” are subject to abuse and financial crimes, and are extremely volatile.
🗞 Google Cloud Joins EOS Blockchain Network as a Block Producer Candidate
Google Cloud will join the EOS community and has begun the process of becoming a block producer candidate for Block.one’s EOS network.
According to an email shared with Blockchain.News on Oct 6, tech giant Google’s hyperscale cloud and infrastructure provider, Google Cloud, is set to join the EOS community and is taking steps to become a block producer for the public blockchain network built on the EOSIO blockchain protocol.
What is a Block Producer?
Block producers are a core component of the EOS network. According to the EOS white paper, the blocks in the EOS.IO software will be produced by 21 producers which are called “Block Producers”. EOS architecture uses Delegated Proof of Stake (DPOS), which creates blocks through trusted accounts (also called “trustees”) that are selected by the community. The features of DPOS include short block production time, high efficiency and almost no chance of forking.
Allen Day, Developer Advocate for Google Cloud confirmed the application for block producer candidacy. He said:
“As organizations begin to incorporate distributed ledger technology into their infrastructures, we are committed to ensuring that the information on public blockchains are securely stored, reliably available, and can be accessed in meaningful ways.”
Brendan Blumer, CEO of Block.one expressed his excitement in having the opportunity to assess Google's candidacy. Blumer said:
“The Google Cloud team understands the thriving EOS community and the highly performant EOSIO technology on which it builds create the best entry point into the blockchain industry. We welcome Google Cloud to the EOS community and are excited for their contributions to the EOS network.”
🗞 John McAfee Arrested in Spain on US Criminal Charges
John McAfee, the 74-year-old software magnate-turned-crypto-bull, has been arrested in Spain on allegations of tax evasion, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. His extradition to the U.S. is pending.
On Monday DOJ prosecutors unsealed a criminal indictment against McAfee, who faces charges of tax evasion and willful failure to file tax returns that could land him behind bars for over five years, if convicted.
The announcement comes the same day the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued McAfee for allegedly pumping initial coin offerings (ICOs) without disclosing he was being paid to do so.
McAfee allegedly received BTC and ETH worth more than $11.6 million for promoting seven ICOs in 2017 and 2018.
He also allegedly received $11.5 million in the promoted tokens. The SEC does not name the projects in the suit.
🗞 Ethereum Hash Rate Breaks New All-Time High
The Ethereum hash rate has hit an all time high of 250 terahashes per second.
The record comes alongside a growth in the DeFi industry.
The hash rate has been steadily increasing throughout 2020.
has set a new record of 250 terahashes per second, according to data from Glassnode. The rate has also jumped by 80% since the beginning of the year.
