Prompt #9 of @JonicaBradley : Success.

SUCCESS.

The audience stared at the lady on the stage with awe and great admiration as she gave her speech. It was not only because of her dazzling beauty but mostly her tremendous success that everyone couldn’t get their eyes off of her.

In just a year she managed to build a fashion empire that surpassed everyone on the top. A lady whose name no one had heard before made headlines in just a short span of time. What the household names did in decades she did it in a snap of a finger. She’s a living fairytale in the modern age.

Everyone wanted to be her yet no one could tell how she did it. The lady would often joke to close colleagues that she have to kill them to know her secret. And thus the gossip of her being an enchantress started. They say she used magic and potions to bewitched people into loving her lines. However, no one could deny the ingenuity of her works. And as the gossip quickly spread it also died in an instant. No one could simply deny her brilliance and those few were left to envy her from a distance.

“Have fun tonight?”

The lady hung her coat and then turned her head to the speaker, “Yes. It was all I have been wishing for. Fame. Money. Success.” She walked to the corner of her office to a small glass cage. She palmed the cage and dimmed the light. “How about you? Have fun here?”

“How am I supposed to have fun in this?” he knocked on the glass pouting. “I would only have fun when you let me out of this stupid cage.”

A loud cackling escaped the lady’s lips, “And why would I let you out? I wouldn’t want to lose everything I have now. That’s a silly thing to say.” She sat down across the cage with a huge smile written on her face. “Tell you what, I would get you a friend, fairies love squirrels, right?”

The fairy snorted, “What do you think of me? A kid? Stop this insolence, you crazy woman. I am Fido, the prince of Northern Fairies and yet you wanted to give me a squirrel for entertainment?”

“Then what do you want? But come on let’s get over freedom. I wouldn’t give it to you,” she said waving her hand in the air, dismissing the notion.

“I have given you everything. Beauty. Intelligence. Talent. What could you possibly want me for? You have everything as you say.”

The lady sighed. “But I don’t have everything. I may have it right now but how about tomorrow?”

The fairy punched the glass cage with his tiny hands. “Don’t sleep with two eyes for when the day comes that I get out of here. I will kill you.”

“Perhaps you would but not today.”

The fairy gave her a cold stare. It was his fault that she became a monster. The wishes he gave her had eaten away her soul. And the sweet being she used to be when she saved her when they were young was now gone. She had already forgotten their friendship, those afternoons they spent together telling each other adventures. And he deeply regretted telling her about his gifts. It was a mistake he couldn’t erase. Therefore he must live his life paying the price. “When will you be contented? When will it be enough?” he asked in a soft voice.

“Never,” she answered. She stood and closed the lights leaving the fairy alone in the dark.
