I know this may be old news, but did you know that the DirectX folder on many older gaming CD-Roms, contain updated display drivers for Windows 9X and Millennium Editions of Windows? Just point to the DirectX folder on the Game CD-ROM it has helped me a couple of times back in Windows 95 and 98 respectively.
