I. The McDrive Thru Project

The McDrive Thru project aims to make the staff's workflow assigned at the drive-thru station work flawlessly and focus more on the cooking process by reducing their work on getting or listing the customers' orders. The McDrive Thru project also focuses on providing the customers with a smooth transaction and lesser time to wait for their food. It aims to provide the best experience as much as possible to every individual who will use the McDrive Thru project.

II. Software

Two software applications will be developed that will play a vital role in assisting the workers in getting the orders flawlessly and without any error.

McDrive Thru App

  • Upon installing the application, users will be guided and instructed on using the buttons on the application and its functions. For example, the switch where the customers will see all of their orders. The customers will use this application to get the orders as well as details on the payment. The application can only be opened and used once the customers enter the so-called "Confirmation Area" or simply the Drive-Thru path or road's perimeter. This area is being detected by data detecting and transmitter equipment, which allows the users of the app to open and confirm their orders. The app was designed to keep unwanted orders from coming in and keep the resources from being wasted.

  • The application has a simple User Interface. The application will display the recommended and best selling products on the home page of the application. By simply tapping the image of the product, you will all the ingredients that were put in it. There will be a sidebar that will sort all types of products, from chickens to burgers and drinks. A search button is also present at the top part of the application for easier access and lesser ordering time for the customers that adds to the staff's work fluidity. Upon confirming his/her order, they will be given a number that they will tell to the staff assigned on the window of the Drive-Thru.

Language – At the first launch of the application, users will be prompted to select the language they prefer

McDrive Thru Operating System

-         This Operating System will be the one to manage all data, print the orders, and display all the necessary information on the monitor.

Software Design – The design would be made as simple as possible, just enough to make people order flawlessly and make the application more stable and bug-free for the best experience.

III. Hardware

The hardware will include all the necessary equipment for the project to be well-executed and work seamlessly.

  • Data Transmission Equipment – This equipment would be the one to confirm orders from the “Ordering Area” and transmit all data to the McDrive Thru Operating System’s Memory database.

  • Monitor – The monitor will display all the confirmed orders made by the customers. It will also show all the sold food and drinks for the day and sort it into different marketing categories.

  • Receipt Printer – The Printer is directly connected to the McDrive Thru Operating system, which will make the printer print all the orders after it was shown for a few seconds. The printer will print all the orders and the total amount of money that the customer should pay.

  • Storage – The Operating System will store all the data collected in a Solid State Drive to provide information for the sales manager or any staff who needs further improvement. The Operating System itself is stored in the Solid State Drive.

  • Portable CPU – A portable CPU would be enough to meet the needs of the operating system and the tasks that will be executed. Tasks include:

1.      Printing

2.      Recording of Data

3.      Storing of Data

4.      Displaying of Data and Information

5. Data Transmission

  • Connection Cables – Connection Cables are necessary to transmit data and instructions from the operating system (stored in the CPU, specifically on the SSD) to the receipt printer and monitor.

IV. Design

                                                              DriveThru Window

The window will be the same as the old ones used by McDonald's except for a new feature where customers can pay and get their order from a moving platform that detects the vehicle's position and expands according to the platform's distance from the customer's vehicle. The platform will expand by pressing the red button and go back by pressing the green button.

Buttons are placed on the inside part of the Drive-Thru window.

V. Question and Answer

A customer who can’t read English?

-         The application’s language could be changed on the settings according to the user’s preference or the language that he understands the most. The application will support every country’s national language where McDonalds is present.

A customer who is hearing impaired?

The application can be touched by the hands and all the texts are readable and adjustable on the settings, so a person who is hearing impaired can easily make orders on the application with its simple User Interface. If there is any problem he/she could ask for assistance with the employee stationed at the Drive-Thru window.

A customer who has never eaten a hamburger before?

An advertisement banner will be displayed at the entrance and near the Drive-Thru window. Products displayed on the entrance will be the new products or the products that are not well known by the customers. The advertisement banner near the Drive-Thru window will be Hamburgers that are displayed to attract customers to try it for it looks so good and appetizing.

 A customer who is health-conscious?

The app has images that can be clicked to know the ingredients put on the food for those people that are health-conscious or those who want to avoid some ingredients on food that is not good for them.

A customer who is over 7’ tall?

One of the most common problems of tall people is that they tend to hit something with their head. Most especially their car windows or some stuff similar to that. The Drive-Thru station has a movable platform that will move near the customer to get their payment and receive their order.  This will save them the trouble of getting out their head from the window to give their payment and get their order. This will also help those people that have some physical illnesses wherein they can’t move their head and body easily.

i have approved this, but your article reminded me when someone from my circles applied to a software developer job, where the task was to write some similar program like this. and she wrote the documentation of the program, writing a long 60 page long documentation, and painting fantastic pictures about it. she did everything fancy, except writing the program itself.
