We all experienced headaches in our life, and few might have experienced other types of headaches but might not have knew what type was it. In this article we will debunk the types of headaches and how to treat them according to doctors.

Types of headaches:

When we speak of headaches, we might think about tension headache, or migraine as an example, but matter of fact, there are many types of headaches, with four of them being the common and main types. The list below will includes all the types overall.

1 - Migraine headache

Migraine headache is one of the four most common headaches in people. This headache normally attacks the face or the neck, and will make the patient sensitive to light and even sound.

Treatments for this type of headache include pain relieving and preventive medicines, which are for reducing the pain and prevent the frequent occurrence of migraine, like blood pressure lowering medicines as an example for the prevention and other.

2 - Sinus headache

Sinus headaches are also quite common in people, and are in the category of the four main headaches. Sinus headaches normally affect the eyes, forehead and cheeks, by putting pressure on those spots. In some cases, the patient will also experience a runny nose.

Treatments for tension headaches include taking breaks from the computer or the mobile phone to prevent eye stain, and applying ice packs or heated pads to the head multiple times in a day.

4 - Cluster headache

Cluster headaches are among the worst headaches ever, they produce severe pain on the one of the sides of head, while giving the patient a drooping eyelid and usually pain around the eye with a runny nose.

Treatments for cluster headaches include octreotide, which is a brain hormone that is injected to treat cluster headaches successfully, other treatments are the following: Injectable sumatriptan, inhaling oxygen which is 100 percent, or dihydroergotamine which are pain reliever that work for some of the people, and other treatments are also available.

Other types of headaches

We highlighted the four most common headache types above, but there are even more that we will talk about in our list.

1 - Hemicrania continua headache

Which is a headache disorder that constantly causes pain in one of the sides of the head and even face.

Treatment for hemicrania continua is called indomethacin or as branded, Tivorbex, which is a nonsteroidal anti inflammatory medicine that reduces the pain.

2 - Stabbing headache

Stabbing headaches, also known are ice picks, are painful headaches that appear suddenly. The effect of this headache feels like one or multiple stabs.

Treatments for this type of headaches are plenty and talking with the dermatologist is the best thing to do for deciding which treatment has to be done.

3 - Spinal headache

Which are caused by the leakage of the spinal fluid.

Treatments go from drinking water and resting to an epidural blood patch, if needed.

4 - Hypertension headache

Is an emergency type of headaches that occurs when a person's blood pressure is too high and dangerous.

Treatments Seek medical treatment in the nearest hospital immediately.

5 - Hormone headache

Menstrual headache, known also as period headache, is a type of headache that can occur during or before a woman's period which can last from some hours to some days.

Treatments for this kind of headache include drinking water, resting and taking medications like Panadol that reduces the pain.

6 - Caffeine headache

Too much coffee is bad for you. Coffee or any other caffeine-filled food or drinks are likely to cause headaches if taken in big quantities and then stopped after. If stopped, the blood vessels gets larger, which then increases the blood flow all over the person's brain, resulting in a headache.

Treatments for caffeine pain includes over-the-counter medicines, staying hydrated and of course, reducing the intake of caffeine.

7 - Rebound headache

Which is caused by frequently taking pain relieving medicines for headaches already in process, or by simply taking the medicines in a larger quantity.

Treatments includes sinus relief medicines, taking aspirin and other.

8 - Post-traumatic headache

This type of headache is caused by the muscle tension during an injury or by the narrowing of blood vessels.

Treatments include anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers.

9 - Thunderclap headache

Thunderclaps are severe headaches that are caused by the bleeding inside a person's brain after a stroke or other types of injuries.

Treatment for this headache include non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and medicines that control blood pressure.

10 - Exercise headache

Gym attenders might be able to relate. Exercise headaches, are headaches that occur after or during a physical activity, and they are most luckily not dangerous.

Treatments for the headache also known as "exertion" headache are taking non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and other types of medications that are commonly taken while having a normal headache.

Conclusion: All of the mentioned headaches cause pain, and some are more severe than others, while any of the dangerous ones require urgent medical attention.

When talking about headaches we only think about normal headaches or something like migraine. I'm overwhelmed on how many types there is. You did a good article and it is really informative. Pain is the enemy of medicines.
