Overview

Coinbase can be split into three distinct services coinbase, coinbase wallet, and coinbase pro. While coinbase pro is my preferred it is as the name suggests not for the less initiated. However i will say that during the initial foray into cryptocurrency the base version was extreamly helpful. Not only was it informative and easily used it has a feature known as learn to earn witch was my first larger sum of cryptocurrency.

Coinbase like many exchanges does have its detractors and drawbacks. For instance the coinbase wallet is not that great i personally hate the design. Not only that the fees on coinbase can be quite absurd witch is why many hate them. However the coinbase pro functionally makes up for their short comings in my opinion.

Coinbase

Let us dear reader begin at the beginning the initial service from which all others stem. All of the aforementioned services while they may not require the initial account they are much better when used in tandem. For instance coinbase wallet is usable regardless of a coinbase account being linked however it is easier to buy in or cash out. However this is in my experience their are regional restrictions to take into account i'm in the U.S so it works well for me.

Coins actively accepted

New coins are added regularly but as of 10/18/2020 it carries...

  • Bitcoin (BTC)

  • Ethereum (ETH)

  • Xrp(XRP)

  • Bitcoin Cash (BCH)

  • Chainlink (LINK)

  • Litecoin (LTC)

  • USD Coin (USDC)

  • Tezos (XTZ)

  • Stellar Lumens (XLM)

  • Cosmos (ATOM)

  • Dai (DAI)

  • Zcash (ZEC)

  • Dash (DASH)

  • Ethereum Classic (ETC)

  • Uniswap (UNI)

  • Maker (MKR)

  • UMA (UMA)

  • OMG Network (OMG)

  • yearn.finance (YFI)

  • Compound (COMP)

  • Algorand (ALGO)

  • Basic Attention Token (BAT)

  • Ren (REN)

  • Ox (ZRX)

  • Celo (CGLD)

  • Loopring (LRC)

  • Kyber Network (KNC)

  • REPv2(REPV2)

  • Augur (REP)

  • Band Protocol (BAND)

  • Balancer (BAL)

  • Numeraire (NMR)

  • Orchid (OXT)

Staking rewards

Although you don't really own the keys and therefore isn't staking on a technical level they offer a apy % on some assets while in your account.

  • USDC with a 0.15% apy

  • DIA with a 2% apy

  • Tezos with a 4.63% apy

  • Cosmos with a 5% apy

Other features

I found their buy in and selling services the most useful however this is in my experience as a U.S citizen and will vary on region. For instance the instant cash out feature is quite helpful especially considering pay pal works with them.

Not just the buying and selling are something to be desired but Learn to earn is also a great feature. Currently offering a potential $171 in rewards for completion of either the assigned quiz or even for referral usage. Also they add new coins to learn to earn the most recent being COMP.

Coinbase wallet

Offering a much wider selection of coins far to many to list here as i'm sure you have better things to fritter your time away on then reading all of them ill skip the total list suffice it to say it is extensive.

What i don't personally like is the outrageous fees for staking sending everything really. While coinbase is bad with fees they found a way to get worse with the wallet. I suggest using a different wallet i use Ledger with a trust wallet and atomic wallet. The hard wallet is unparalleled in security and if i chose to stake or use dapps then i use the others listed. In the future i will do overviews on all the services above.

Coinbase Pro

Coinbase and Coinbase Pro are very similar accept a few important details. All transactions take place on the coinbase pro engine so the real difference between them is the easy to use interface of the coinbase service when compared to pro. Pro gives a real time price where as the base version offers a delayed price. This is not great for anyone trying to trade for a profit.

So assuming you buy in on the base version of coinbase from a debit not credit card. They Still charge a fee of 1.5 percent and assuming that your buying in at a low they don't list active prices so they can realistically keep 40% of potential profit while you take 100% of the risk.

As i have covered before it helps to understand what the company is trying to get from the consumer. So i would suggest that you take a look at their fee structure.

Given the transparent nature on Coinbase Pro it is no real competition on which is better. All of the positive traits of Coinbase are on Coinbase pro as well. With the added benefit of the clarity of the current prices as well as many extra features that ill cover in a future overview of exclusively coinbase pro and its features.

Conclusion

While all of their featured services bring their own benefits to the table. If your really serious about investing use Pro they really only have the other services to make it easier on new users and charge exorbitant fees to do so.
