Literary Piece/Title: The Lonely Soul by R. E. G. Armattoe

I.          Language

-        The Lonely Soul is simple and can understand easily what the author implies to the readers when you focus and understand the structures/forms of the words itself. The language of this poem uses repetition and it has no rhyme scheme from the start to finish unlike most of the poem who has meters and rhyming words.

II.          Point of View (POV)—using any of the POV, describe the character from the story.

-        Base on the persona’s point of view, both an old woman and the man that the persona had met are sad and lonely. It shows the poem when the author repeatedly used the phrases “Talking to herself” and “Lonely Road”. The narrator intended to show the emotion of the characters he met which is sad but they ironically show it by talking to themselves and laughing all the time to forget that they are alone.

III.          Tone / Atmosphere

In the beginning of the poem, the persona narrates that he met an old woman and so a man. In the middle of the poem, the first person was talking to us with authority and address us as a child telling us that we don’t know why they talk to themselves. In the ending of the story, it is obvious that the feeling of the narrator becomes sad and lonely, he also compared it same to both men and an old woman where they make themselves happy and prevent themselves from crying. It happens when they get older and think they are alone. The wondering of the persona leads him to answer why they are talking to themselves and that sadness and loneliness was the reason of it.

IV.          Motif, Theme or Symbol

The theme of the poem is the impact of loneliness on humans especially when the time comes for them to get old. Also, there are symbols used by the author in the poem, one of them was the lonely road that symbolizes one’s loneliness and sadness. The shower of an arrow is also used as a symbol of the problems and worries that we are facing.
