This is not a disease itself but rather a symptom of disease or disorder. People with jaundice have a characteristic yellowing tinge to their skin and the whites of their eyes due to excessive amounts of bile pigment, known as bilirubin, in the blood and tissue fluids. There may be many different causes of jaundice, but the main ones include hepatitis where the liver is unable to deal with bile in the normal way, gallstones which may block the bile duct, and the excessive breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis) which may be due to certain poisons, infections such as malaria or some forms of anaemia. This last form of jaundice is frequently found in new-born babies when the liver is not developed enough to cope with the normal breakdown of red blood cells. It usually clears up in a couple of days. A serious cause of jaundice in new-born babies is rhesus (rh) factor which incompatibility, which results in hemolytic disease of the new-born. Jaundice from any cause subsides when the cause is corrected.
