Barber’s Rash
Infection of the hair follicles in the beard area, which may spread into the surrounding skin resulting in impetigo. Treatment is by local or oral antibiotics.
Coeliac Disease
A disorder in which the lining of the small intestine is so adversely affected by glutens, the proteins found in wheat, rye and barley, that food cannot be properly digested. The disease tends to run in families and is usually diagnosed early in life, though in mild cases may not cause great health disturbance until adulthood, when anemia develops due to failure to absorb essential vitamins and minerals. Symptoms in infants include pot belly, loose, foul smelling stools, failure to thrive and irritability. In adults there may be bouts of diarrhea, flatulence and abdominal distension, wasting and weakness. Effective treatment is a gluten-face diet.
