Cold weather is relaxing. It’s the time of having a long nap during the day. Looking by the window while sipping your coffee as the rain pours, is good for a deep thoughts about life. I personally love the rain, but my body doesn’t want cold and very low temperature. I have this unusual allergy to cold. It is called cold urticaria- a skin allergy that appears within minutes after the skin is exposed to cold and usually lasts for 1-2 hours. The affected skin (the part that exposed to cold water or cold weather) will start to show reddish itchy welts (hives). Some people have mild reaction to colds while some have severe reactions. Based on my own experienced, during cold season, or even hot season as long as the water is cold, after I took bath with cold water, I got rashes which is very itchy all over my body. Also, when the aircondition is really strong, I start to have those reddish rashes that start to multiply as I scratch it. the most severe reaction that I experienced is when I am not yet aware of my condition, I jump into the water during our outing (falls located in the mountain), the water is really cold and it’s still early in the morning, just after five minutes or so, I feel the itch all over my body and it’s hard to breath. That’s when I realized I have this weird reaction when my body is exposed to cold. The sudden change in temperature can cause a shock to my body that will result to fainting and a very low blood pressure. I searched about it and found out such allergy exist. The exact cause of cold urticaria is unknown. When I see a doctor that’s when I was told that I can’t go to places with very low temperature. The only treatment is cold avoidance and if the allergy attacks, medicine such as antihistamine must be taken to help fight the allergy.
