Tomorrow’s Sustainability depends on Today’s Actions

Sustainable environment pictures a society that meets the present and future basic resource needs of its people, fair enough not to compromise the ability of the next generation to meet their necessities. Widely available public transport powered by electricity or other energy resource is one feature of a sustainable environment. Also, recycling is extremely effective and industries reduce their waste either through recycling or other advance method without harming the environment in the future. Those are some examples that the environment has the capacity to sustain the needs of people.

Change is inevitable. We cannot deny the fact that our environment today changed and constantly changing. Due to emerging various technologies, we have witnessed how it affects us and our environment both in a negative and positive way. If we will assess the status of our environment today, we can say that the detrimental effects are much more evident than the positive ones. According to Rishin Mukherjee of Youth Ki Awaaz in Environment, most damage on the environment was caused by high quantity of exhaust gases mainly from vehicles and different industries. The rise in population also contributes to high demand thus limiting the resources. “If current trends continue, and the world fails to enact solutions that improve patterns of production and consumption, if we fail to use natural resources sustainably, then the state of the world’s environment will continue to decline,” warned Achim Steiner, executive director of UNEP. He further discussed that measures to reduce air pollution, such as changes to vehicles; the damage to marine eco-systems, which can have a huge effect on fish stocks on which hundreds of millions of people depend; and the degradation of land when modern agricultural methods were pursued without regard to the longer-term consequences. The increased in droughts and floods affects the economies that leads to famine and scarcity. Another environmental issue that we are facing today is emission of greenhouse gases that worsened climate change. There is no direct approach to address this problem so reducing the usage of what causes the greenhouse gases is one possible option as well as self-discipline. In connection, reports show the shrinking of glaciers as the climate warms. One example is the shrinking of glaciers in Andes which provide vital water resources for tens of millions of people. Other concerns that become problematic includes the rise of sea levels, extreme weather, air pollution including acid rain, ozone depletion, water crises, deforestation, and a lot of activities that destroys the environment. On the other hand, there are also technologies and studies that lead to reduction of these problems. Some includes the use of renewable resources like hydroelectric , nuclear, solar, wind power, and biofuels. Smart technology, another example, enables the control when to illuminate certain areas that requires it and a smart thermostat keeps home at certain temperature during certain times of the day, therefore reducing the wastage. Also, electric vehicles was developed to lessen the harmful gases that the usual vehicles produced to disrate air pollution. A technology was also invented to remove excess carbon from the atmosphere. It is called Direct Air Capture (DAC) where it captures the carbon dioxide directly from ambient air and generating a concentrated stream of carbon dioxide for utilization. The air is then pushed through a filter by many large fans where carbon dioxide is removed. Fascinating as it seems but we cannot deny the fact that some advancements are too expensive and that poor and developing countries will not be able to afford it.

In the world's recent situation where the pandemic is present, we can see that the earth is slowly healing. The lockdown that prohibits people to go outside reduces the harmful gases exerted by vehicles and public transportation. People stayed at their own houses eating home cooked foods instead of going to restaurants and other establishments so general waste was also decreased. Our environment is experiencing an improvement but we should also continue to provide ways to change back our earth to a clean and green place that will be a sustainable home for us and for the future generations. Each and everyone of us can contribute to achieve a green and sustainable earth. As a future chemical engineer for instance, use the basic knowledge about waste disposal and disseminate the information for awareness of the public. Promote the use of renewable resources and find ways to lessen the cost of the equipments. Introduce organic practices in farming and gardening. Also, device a system where waste from industries will be converted into something useful instead of being harmful. We can't afford to just sit back and relax not worrying about the problem just because people don't see it as one. For all the time we look forward to our dreams and future, can we include the Earth as one of our wishes?, in that time, it can grow too.
