Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg the Metaverse and the Quest for Control of Virtual Life!

We all know who Mark Zuckerberg and we definitely know what Facebook is. Most probably we all have/had an account there, may it be still active or inactively hibernating as we haven't posted or interacted in ages.

But Facebook is more than a social network, it's a Technology conglomerate owning among others Instagram, WhatsApp, Occulus and etc. Lately, Facebook has been on the media and under scrutiny after a whistleblower came forward bringing internal documents that show Facebook has been putting profits instead of users, including children

Now, it looks like Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, announced the next step for his company. That includes the creation of what he called a Metaverse namely his company Meta from the namesake.

Neal Stephenson coined the term, and established a vision of a “computer generated universe,” in his 1992 novel Snow Crash

So in search of a computer generated world, beyond our physical existence we will be able to work, live, socialize, train, and do whatever else we are accustomed to in our daily life, this time in a digital space.

Looking at it from a blockchain perspective, a decentralized Metaverse would make sense, as you are the owner of your persona and not a company. Furthermore, you would be able to own land and items in the form of NFTs which then you could sell or move them out.

Thought, after knowing all that we do about Facebook would you trust them with your data?

From what we have seen until now, Facebook's/Meta metaverse will try to ride on the hype of crypto by developing its own blockchain. To add to that Facebook/Meta has been developing for some time its own cryptocurrency (Libra) that would be probably the currency of their metaverse. At the same time with the partnership of Coinbase they are developing a cryptocurrency wallet called Novi

Therefore, this is not just a rebranding for Zuckerberg and co. This is something bigger. It is an expansion of his company's activities in such a way that would make many who are hesitant to follow along, especially the ones who are for decentralization and already are aware of Zuckerberg's and his company's past malpractices. Would you want that your personal, financial, work-related, health and other data to be owned and controlled by Meta (Facebook!), which at the same time would own the virtual world you operate and can alter your experience to your detriment for their own profit.

There's always though something good happening in the internet. The silver-lining in this case is that the news coverage of Facebook's new endeavours and name has allowed to bring into the spotlight for the masses alternative blockchain projects aiming to develop virtual worlds worlds that are completely decentralizes, such as Decentraland

https://decentraland.org/

A world owned by the users is far more preferable than a world owned by Zuckerberg and co. I would side with the former as long as there are alternatives at play.

I believe that as soon as this project is definitively inaugurated, the Nation-States will cease to exist to give way to a great commonality within the Internet world, Facebook will become our new nation.

That's likely. But, I don't see it happening soon but rather some decades from now at the earliest in a form of a digitalized / globalized "corporatiocracy"

And those who will suffer are the new generations, which is regrettable.

Thing is that social media has no longer remained as a platform to gain and share information but has become a marketing hub, political agenda thus minting money machine for entrepreneurs like Mark Zuckerberg, I wonder if this kind of capitalism would spread over to decentralized platforms or not? Great article btw.

I am afraid it will, as most decentralized platforms offer / will offer financial incentivization. The difference is that in decentralized platforms you will be able to filter it out from your personal virtual "space"

I wonder what Mark would do; next; I hope he doesn't control everything because that is how things are looking now. He is in the news way too much these days; it is scary.

Seeing what he did with Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc he most likely aims at a near total virtual control, or having the majority of the pie
