How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

In today's generation, people tend to be more open to the idea of doing makeup and also, having that glass skin those Korean girls we watch on TV have.

People tend to now have a skin care routine that they follow to have that glass skin they have always been dreaming of and yes, that totally helps a lot but one thing they didn't probably know is, makeup brushes also play a huge role into maintaining a clear and glass skin.

Benefits of Having Clean Makeup Brushes

Before we talk about how to clean your makeup brushes, let us first discuss some benefits of having clean makeup brushes.

  1. Lessens acne-causing bacteria from spreading on to your skin.

If you do not clean your makeup brushes, the makeup residue that is on there will build up and that would be a very nice home for acne-causing bacteria. And I'm sure you don't want that to be spreading on to your skin, right?

  2. Avoid clogging your pores

Based on what I said on number 1, the makeup residue that is left on your makeup brushes can also cause to clog your pores. Our pores are very sensitive and when it gets clogged, it will result to a dull and broken out skin.

  3. Applies Makeup A Lot Better
Think about a rug. If you use a rug over and over again without cleaning it, it will end up, messing up things more than actually cleaning it. The same thing goes with makeup brushes. When you keep using it without cleaning it, the makeup residue on there will end up mixing up and the color you wanted wouldn't even be the same anymore when you apply it since it has already been mixed with other makeup residue. But if it is clean, it will totally apply makeup a lot better.

  4. It keeps the bristles soft

If a makeup brush is clean, it will definitely be soft and, trust me, it is very nice to do makeup if your makeup brushes are soft. It wouldn't hurt or irritate your skin.

  5. Keeps your brush last longer

If you clean your makeup brushes regularly, it will end up lasting longer and will definitely save you a lot of money in the long run.

So, those are why cleaning your makeup brushes is very important.

How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Since we have already discussed the benefits, now, let us get into how to clean your makeup brushes.

I do have two ways on cleaning your makeup brushes: cleaning it everyday and deep cleaning.

1. Clean Your Makeup Brushes Everyday

What you need:

  • A good makeup brush cleaner

  • Tissue or a cloth

  • Your dirty makeup brush

Personally, I use this makeup brush cleaner from Ellana Mineral Cosmetics. It is a spray makeup brush cleaner.

So, what you have to do is, just spray it into your brushes and then rub your brushes on a tissue and you can see the makeup residue transferring to the tissue and cleaning up the brush.

It doesn't get your makeup brush really wet so after doing it, you can already use your makeup brush right after. This is very good if you are cleaning your makeup brush on the go. You can do this before and/or after doing your makeup.

2. Deep Cleaning

But, doing that everyday will also be not enough to get rid of all the makeup residue on your brushes since it is only subtle cleaning and this is when deep cleaning comes in.

It is important to deep clean your brushes at least once a week or once every two weeks (if you are a very busy person).

What you need:

  • Water

  • Baby shampoo/liquid soap

  • Vinegar

  • Oil

  • Makeup Brush Scrub Pad

  • Your dirty makeup brushes

I used to use Johnson's Baby Shampoo in cleaning my makeup brushes since they would end up leaving your brushes with soft bristles but recently, when I cleaned my brushes and I didn't have the baby shampoo, I used Ariel Powder Detergent instead and surprisingly, it worked a lot better than the baby shampoo I used to use. When I used the baby shampoo, there would still be some pinkish-red situation going on with my brushes because of the blush and some eyeshadow but with the powder detergent, they are all gone! And I guess, the bristles are still soft.

So here is what you will do:

Step 1: Get a jar where your brushes could fit in.

Step 2: Fill in the jar with water (not too much water, maybe just a little less than a half of the jar)

Step 3: Add in the baby shampoo or liquid soap or powder detergent (whichever you have available)

Step 4: Add a little bit of vinegar (at least 2-3 teaspoons) and oil (at least 2-3 teaspoons)

Step 5: Mix them all together and let the water bubble a bit

Step 6: Dip in your makeup brushes and then leave it for about 25-30 minutes

Step 7: After 25-30 minutes, start scrubbing the makeup brushes with the makeup brush scrub pad (do it gently, not too harsh)

Step 8: When you are satisfied with how clean it is, start rinsing it off and do the same thing with the other makeup brushes you have

Step 9: Once finished, let them air dry over night or, if you are lucky and it is sunny, you can let them dry under the heat of the sun to make the drying process quicker.

So, there you have it! That is how you clean your makeup brushes.
