The present generation is hooked to social media. Like it or not, they feel incomplete without it. Social media is less of a social interaction site but a way of projecting them self to the world. A considerable amount of time is spent on social media as all have multiple social media options. It is important to keep these accounts secure so that they are not hacked and misused. A lot of people are preying the social media sites looking for innocent targets to exploit.
I will share some tips on safeguarding your social media sites.
Don’t save password in public devices
Saving password is an easy way to log in to your account as we need not remember and type it every time we log in. While logging in this is the first thing google asks, do you want to save your password? And routinely we accept it. When in a public computer then also we may inadvertently click ok for it. So be careful when accessing social media or any sites from a public computer or even your friend’s device.
Log out
Always log out when the work is done, be it your device or a public device. That way, your account will be more secure. Have patience to log in the next time. Hackers have ingenious ways to hack your account so you have to take all precautions. Don’t make your e mail address or phone number known to those who do not require as these can be used to retrieve your log in information.
2 factor authentication
Always go for 2 factor authentication, it is a double layer of protection. Most of use prefer the direct way of log in without this but then you are making yourself more susceptible to hacking. There is google 2 factor authentication or you can go for receiving a second layer of OTP in your e mail or phone number.
Clean up browser regularly
If you frequently visit unsecured or shady websites like porn etc then you should clean up the browser regularly to prevent unwanted virus and phishing attacks. An adware removing tool is helpful in this regard.
Spyware and malware
If you download any application from a non trusted source or unknown source then most likely you will become a target of malware and spyware which can easily get access to your saved data including passwords, PIN etc. So do have a good internet security package of a reputed company and don’t forget to keep it updated regularly. Also have regular scanning of device.
Lock your account
When we give phone to someone else for repair then always lock your social media accounts if the feature is available. Even if you know the person repairing it then also you have to be careful. Sometimes people record there intimate moments and then those can get disclosed and you can get blackmailed or these videos and photos can be up loaded in porn sites. Though this point is not particularly related to social media accounts but I thought it to include it. Even when mobile phone is lost then also you can face such issues.
If you account is hacked then approach a knowledgeable person to deal with it who have save your account. There have been many cases where pictures of girls have been taken from social media sites and morphed to show nudity and then blackmailed for money or sex. So it is always good to stay protected at all times. Also as we are doing more and more online transactions so protecting our bank and other account is necessary to secure our hard earned money. It is our responsibility to keep ourselves secure and in the online world everyone is anonymous and criminals easily stay unknown. If your phone is lost then make sure to log into your accounts from another device and lock the accounts which you want to keep secure.
