Ramen as a unique dish!
The simple fact of thinking that Japanese gastronomy until recently was so unknown and exotic to us, and that now ramen is one of the Japanese dishes that is currently triumphing is completely incredible. Not to mention that some people know this dish from an anime, manga or simply have seen it somewhere.
However, it is important to mention that it is not a dish of purely Japanese creation, but it is a function of China and its adaptation to different traditions. Unlike buckwheat soba, ramen is prepared with Chinese wheat noodles, which can be found in Asian restaurants.
How did Chinese cuisine come to Japan?
The first contact of the Japanese with Chinese cuisine occurred in the 19th century, when Japan opened its borders to the rest of the world, allowing the entry of travelers, traders and migrants from other cultures. Chinese noodle soup soon became very popular because it was nutritious, tasty and very economical.
The Japanese were adapting Chinese recipes and soon spread to all corners of the country, as local and street stalls, emerging at the same time different varieties and specialties according to the regions. First it was determined as Shina-soba or Chuka-soba (Chinese noodle soup), but over time the term ramen spread and assimilated completely throughout the country. However, the big difference and defining characteristic between Japanese ramen and Chinese soup is the broth. It could be said that it is the base or soul of a good ramen, what defines the dish and its mark of quality.
It is important to note that each chef brings his special touch, taking very seriously the preparation of a really tasty and comforting broth. However, its preparation is time-consuming, so don't be in a hurry.
As I mentioned before, ramen has been around for a century in Japan, which is impressive for the simple fact that it has become one of the most popular everyday dishes in the country. But, roughly speaking, ramen is practically a soup that can be accompanied, i.e. it can be vegetarian, with meat or fish, and cold or hot, and it can be served with a side dish.
I must admit that I have met people who have tried ramen in my country, and they say that it is really exquisite and deserves the recognition it is getting today, so we could say that ramen has not only conquered Japan, but the whole world!
