Have you ever wondered why neon lights in Japan have been so popular since their inception? Well, this is because they have a predilected importance in Japanese history, because it is mistakenly believed that they are new and have been incorporated into the culture of the country as a result of the social explosion that led to the manga and even anime.
However, the first illuminated poster that Japan had appeared as a result of an advertising attempt in 1926, which was during and after World War II. Not to mention that after the war, this fad became increasingly popular, causing a company to erect a huge billboard inspired by the huge posters that had already been seen on the streets of New York. This event caused the Ginza district in Tokyo to broadcast the unveiling of the billboard on television throughout Japan.
Well, the aforementioned was a historical milestone, because more and more businesses in the city saw the value of their own neon signs. So it was that from the 1960s onwards, Tokyo's business districts were completely filled with neon signs ranging from gypsy signs to small window signs.
There is a place in the city of DÅtonbori that at night becomes an amazing paradise of bright lights and giant mechanical crabs advertising the best restaurants, stores and famous corporations that Japan owns. This city also has an antique neon sign, because it has been around since the 1930's, but there are theories that it may have been around before 1926, which has become an icon in the city, used for sporting events and welcoming international visitors.
