Did you know that...?
A few weeks ago Disney released a new movie, being a clear example of what many teenagers live nowadays. This movie is called Red and here I will tell you why everyone should watch it and take as an example the hidden message behind it.
This movie introduces us to Mei, a 13-year-old girl whose desires to be an adult are repressed by her overprotective and domineering mother. But, Mei's life changes drastically one morning when she discovers that she has her first menstruation and literally turns into a big red bear.
We can visualize that Mei is a girl who has received an upbringing based on overprotection, i.e., her mother is afraid of being hurt, afraid that she will get out of what she says and even afraid that her friends will put "ideas" into her daughter's head. However, Mei has accepted it for 13 years, pleases her mother, does everything she asks of her, fulfills her obligations and gets good grades to make her mother happy and proud of her.
Mei tries, even begs her mother to understand that she is 13 years old and wants to have her own ideologies, thoughts and decisions about various things that only she should make. She wants to do everything her mother forbids her to do, but it is normal for a girl of that age, for example: to meet her friends in the evenings, to go to a concert of her favorite band or to meet new people.
Becoming a big red bear has helped Mei in a good way, she experienced many things and was able to confront her mother at the end, being part of a change in her life, after that event, the relationship between mother and daughters was different.
This is the plot as such of the movie, however this fiction is very similar to what we teenagers live today. For example, the normalization of something as normal as menstruation is part of our development, we should not feel ashamed for having it or for buying the utensils we need in those situations. Let's remember that menstruation is part of our body and that it will happen at some point.
It also tells us about how we have to follow our parents, forcing ourselves to have their same thoughts, indulging them in something we don't like to do. Repressing what we feel and think to keep them really happy and proud. Something that shouldn't be so.
It's fine to want to see your parents happy, we all want the same, but we should do it as we really are, doing what we like, saying what we think or feel about it. So, we should confront them, but in an appropriate way. For example, sit down and talk to them about the situation, surely this will help them to understand you and above all to give you some freedom in the decisions you have to make.
Personally, I recommend you to watch this movie, as it also addresses other important issues, it also has incredible characters, an exquisite plot, among others.
I hope you liked and enjoyed this article!
