Tattooing is the permanent introduction of inks of different colors into the skin with the help of specially made needles. Mostly people get tattoos for aesthetic, ritual, customary and social reasons.
The word "tattoo" is believed to have two main origins - from the Polynesian word ta meaning to strike something and the Tahitian word tatau meaning to mark something. The history of tattooing dates back over 5,000 years and is as diverse as the people who wear it. A tattoo is created by inserting colored materials under the surface of the skin. The first tattoos were most likely created by accident.
People rubbed the wounds on their bodies with their hands soiled with soot and fire ashes. When the wound healed, they noticed that the sign remained permanently. Despite the growing fascination of the social sciences with tattooing and the immense popularity of the tattoos themselves, not many historical records remain of the practice of that activity.
The 5,000-year-old tattooed man appeared on the front pages of newspapers around the world in 1991, when his frozen body was discovered on a mountain between Italy and Austria. It is the best preserved body from that period ever found. There are 57 tattoos on the skin: a cross on the inside of the left knee, six horizontal straight lines 15 cm long on the back and numerous parallel lines on the ankles. The location of the tattoos suggests that they were probably made for therapeutic reasons (arthritis treatment).
Tattoo experienced expansion after the invention of the first tattoo machine, the last decade of the 19th century by Samuel O’Reilly, an artist and tattoo artist.
