When fado is mentioned, most of the younger audience first thinks of Mariza, the famous Portuguese singer, who today spreads the fame of this music genre around the world. However, fado was created centuries earlier, inspired by the difficult life of the Portuguese people, their daily worries, but also by the introduction of African rhythms and Portuguese poetry into music. The word fado comes from the Latin fatum, meaning "destiny". This music originated from troubadour ballads, expressing the longing and waiting for loved ones to return from long voyages to the time of great discoveries, but also under the influence of the Afro-Brazilian lundum - music and slave dance from South America. The central notion of fado is saudade which expresses a complex feeling of sadness, longing and melancholy.
