On July 28, 1890, the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh died of self-injury. It was the end of a long, difficult and painful life of an incomprehensible genius who, in a moment of madness, even cut off his own ear.
The exact reasons why the painter Vincent van Gogh decided to cut off his ear remain a mystery after more than a century. New research casts doubt on the popular theory that the famous painter Vincent van Gogh cut off his ear in moments of madness after an argument with "colleague" artist Paul Gauguin.
Namely, Martin Bailey, researcher and author of the book about the famous painter "Studio of the South" claims that Van Gogh cut off his ear after receiving a letter stating that his brother Theo, Vincent's greatest founder and admirer, would marry, Garidjan writes.
Until now, it was known that Van Gogh was a great opponent of that marriage. The artist feared that he would break his close relationship with Theo and that in the end his brother, once he started his own family, would be denied financial help, on which the artist relied heavily, since he had not yet sold any of his works.
However, historians have so far believed that the letter in which Theo informs him about the marriage arrived only after Van Gogh had already cut off his ear.
Bailey claims that he has evidence that the painter received the letter on December 23, 1888, just a few hours before he cut off his ear. That evening, it is true, there was an argument with Paul Gauguin, but she was just the "icing on the cake" of the already very unhappy Vincent.
However, that night the painter cut off his ear and ended up in a psychiatric hospital. So instead of spending Christmas with his young fiancée, Theo came to visit his brother.
After a short stay in the insane asylum, Van Gogh was fired on January 7, and then he wrote to Theo: "Beautiful days will come soon and I will start painting orchids in bloom again."
In 1890, Van Gogh moved to Over Sir Oise, north of Paris, where he created his last work before committing suicide. He last saw his brother during his visit on July 6, 1890.
Vincent van Gogh shot himself on July 27 and died two days later in Theo's presence.
After his brother's death, Theo became depressed and was soon admitted to a sanatorium in Utrecht, where he was diagnosed with "general paralysis of the nerves associated with syphilis", but today the possibility is mentioned that he suffered from temporary acute porphyria, which may have been Vincent's basic disease.
Until November of the same year, he himself was permanently admitted to the insane asylum. He died a few months later at the age of 33. Theo and Vincent van Gogh are buried next to each other.
Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch painter, graphic artist and draftsman, a post-impressionist who is considered one of the most famous and influential people in the history of Western art.
