Big fish in the Metaverse : Meta

Facebook changed its name to Meta Platforms last year, and the company will focus on its own metaverse-like services over the next few years, spending $ 10 billion on it.

After several failed attempts, in early December last year, Meta officially launched a platform called Horizon Worlds for all users in the U.S. and Canada, which was previously only available in beta to some customers. There are a number of user-generated social experiences and games available on Horizon - the latter is a very prominent aspect in both the promotional video below and other videos from around the world, as Facebook and Instagram will be primarily user-generated.

A big advantage of Meta over its competitors is that Oculus, one of the manufacturers of devices for the use of future virtual platforms, is also in-house. Oculus, the maker of VR headsets, first unveiled a prototype of its device in 2013, and Facebook bought the company for $ 2.3 billion in the next year, so the company moved to virtual reality long before it was renamed Meta. What has been a huge improvement in the headset itself compared to previous iterations is that it now works wirelessly, with virtually nothing to add, just to pick up and head for virtual reality. The Oculus has come down in price over the years, making it cheaper than a new-generation console. Of course, there is room for improvement here as well, as battery life and the resolution provided by Quest 2 also leave something to be desired, and some users continue to complain of dizziness and nausea after prolonged use.

Horizon Worlds isn’t the only project at Meta, as the goal with another “metaverse" of the company, Horizon Workrooms, is to promote telecommuting. The goal of the app is to create a virtual office environment that the company says is both a work experience and a sense of presence at work, and collaboration is more efficient, as you don’t actually have to be physically in the same place with colleagues for brainstorming, for example. Another very exciting feature, which can also be seen in the video below, is that the Oculus scans the user's screen, keyboard and desktop compared to it, so it's essentially possible to work on your own machine with the headset on the user's head, so they can essentially take their laptops into virtual space.
