Prior to June 2009, Irrawaddy dolphins were on the world's endangered species list. Domestic and foreign animal experts from the World Life Conservation Society, NY and the Bangladesh Sitasin Diversity Project conducted extensive research in the Bay of Bengal, including the East Sundarbans. In addition to the Irrawaddy, they found six species of dolphins and one species of whale. The discovery of Irabati, who was lost from the world, in Bangladesh was then discussed among zoologists. Irrawaddy rose overnight from the World Life Conservation Society's list of 'extinct' species to 'endangered' list.

Gangetic dolphins are the main freshwater dolphins of Bangladesh. Irrawaddy and Gangetic dolphins are easily seen in the rivers of the Sundarbans. But these two species of dolphins are currently endangered all over the world including Bangladesh.
