We fear what lies beyond, especially when we don’t recognize what will happen. By this phrase, it also means we are satisfied where we are at the moment –the place we consider our comfort zones. What if we know what awaits there but we refuse to take notice of it? Then, that is ignorance.
There is so much to learn and know from the books we hold. We tend to rebuff from our lives as citizens of this country and stays what we are –students. But who would give a crap to the events circling within the nation when we are busy studying at home and breaking our legs in school right? We need to pass every subject and strive to graduate as soon as possible. Then the inevitable looms right in front of us. People outside home talk about things in a language seemingly foreign to our ears. Now we wonder, “Is this still the same world that it whenever we are at home?” “Why is it that, killing is so rampant nowadays?” “Is death penalty going to be reintroduced to our country?” Indeed, much is asked. But the most awful thing is most of us don’t know how to react to these questions.
This situation is no different when the teacher lays instructions for an activity that doesn’t stir much our concern. When the task is executed, we start to throw complaints, questioning the instruction’s transparency and preciseness. Then out of nowhere, our classmates tell us that we should have listened carefully in the first place. The same thing when the person we thought to be less deserving won the officers election, garnering more votes than his extra worthy opponent. But who we are to complain?
In that case, more open-minded should we be. Involvement in one’s community is far more crucial than meets the eye. We re, undeniably students whose major concern and purpose is to wear a black toga and obtain that diploma. Yet having this kind of situation makes us pigs inside a fence. The more we stay cornered, the more stinking we become. A figurative comparison, but true.
Coming out of our comfort zones is never impractical. What we need is to think outside the box, look forward, step once, and then walk farther. Yes, we are students but we are Filipinos first. And it’s time for us to step out because we have been secluded for too long.
