Metaverse has been buzzing on the internet ever since Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook was going to change its name to Meta. the metaverse is a futuristic idea, and mark was the first person to pioneer that movement. If you didn’t know what metaverse means then after reading this you will understand why it’s a futuristic idea after reading. Facebook is still going to retain its name but the overall company name is now Meta. Meta is the umbrella that covers Facebook, Instagram, Oculus, and WhatsApp. It is similar to Alphabet being the parent company of Google, YouTube, and others.
Although Mark Zuckerberg cannot be credited for coining the name “Metaverse” he is the first person trying to make it a reality. The concept is to use virtual reality and other technologies to travel into the meta. well, let’s define Metaverse.
What is Metaverse?
In simple terms, we can say that metaverse is the internet brought to life by rendering it in 3D. according to Zuckerberg, he explained it is a “virtual environment” you can go inside the metaverse instead of just looking at it on the screen. It is going to be an endless world of connected virtual communities where people can meet, work, and play using virtual headsets, augmented reality glasses, smartphone apps, and other gadgets.
The metaverse will also make online shopping easier and incorporate some aspects of social media. It will also improve the online teaching process as students and teachers can link up online through the metaverse. The metaverse holds a lot of positive potentials but there are some negatives as well.
This is going to be the next evolution of the internet and I see people having a virtual life aside from their real life soon.
What will people do in the Metaverse?
The metaverse is going to bring fun in numerous ways for example I already see musicians organizing concerts in the metaverse and having people from all over the world attending. You can travel to various locations virtually once you have your virtual gadgets on. You can go shopping I mean real-life shopping virtually.
For those that work from home, the metaverse is going to be a gamechanger I can imagine co-workers in a virtual office working together. If you watch Mark Zuckerberg’s presentation he used a work environment to showcase what could happen in the metaverse. In September 2020 Mark Zuckerberg was hosted by popular tech youtuber Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) and he briefly explained how Marques could use the metaverse to connect with his subscribers and even let them touch and use certain phones.
At the moment Microsoft and Nvidia are also working on a metaverse but we are not certain with regards to how things will turn out to be. However, these technology giants must work together if they want the metaverse to be seamless. They have to agree on simple terms and standards for the metaverse.
Is facebook going all in on the metaverse?
Metaverse is the number one priority of facebook at the moment. Zuckerberg sees it as the next big thing on the internet. The world is becoming more and more digital we even have digital assets and currencies right now. He wants to position himself as the pioneer of the metaverse and that’s why he is going all-in with the project.
Facebook has a controversial record with a lot of privacy issues. That is one of the reasons why he rebranded the company and names it, Meta. it shows the new direction that Zuckerberg has found for his company.
Is Facebook the only company working on a Metaverse?
No, as I said earlier Microsoft and Nvidia are also working on building a Metaverse but right now we don’t know what it's going to look like. I believe a lot of companies are already building and testing virtual worlds in the metaverse.
In the same way, there are different companies doing things on the internet. According to Richard Kerris, Vice President of Nvidia Omniverse platform “it is important to be open and extensible, so you can teleport to different worlds whether its by one company or the other same way I go from one webpage to another.
Video gaming company Epic Games, is also taking a leading role in building a metaverse. Their popular game Minecraft has raised over a billion dollars from investors to help with its long-term plan of building a metaverse. Roblox is another giant gaming platform that is also interested in creating a metaverse.
There are also going to be some consumer brands that will participate in the metaverse by selling digital accessories in the metaverse.
