China alleges that Indian troops illegally crossed the disputed border and fired "provocative" shots at its patrols.
A military spokesman said the Chinese military had been "forced to retaliate". But what those measures were, it was not disclosed.
This is probably the first shooting in the area in 45 years. If there is an agreement between the two countries not to carry firearms, it will be violated.
There has been a lot of deterioration in relations between the two nuclear-armed countries in recent times.
People's Liberation Army spokesman Senior Colonel Zhang Shuili was quoted by the Chinese state news agency Global Times as saying that Indian troops had "illegally crossed the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Shenpao Hills area." Pangong has entered the southern shore of So Lake.
India's move is "a serious breach of the two sides' agreement, raising tensions in the area ... which is very detrimental to nature there," said Colonel Zhang.
However, no response has been received from India so far.
