Speaking of rabbits, I remembered that some years ago I was researching about rabbits, as you now know, I like rabbits and I had one as a pet, but that's not all, when I was studying first grade in school, I made a story about a rabbit and his mother. I remember it was called "Little Brown Tail Rabbit". It was about the life of a little white rabbit with a brown tail who lived with his mother in the forest...

Because I love rabbits so much, as a teenager I had done a lot of research on them and fell in love with a specific species of rabbits, called the Flanders rabbit. These rabbits have a characteristic very different from any other rabbit, these rabbits are huge.

How could such a huge rabbit exist?

Well, they do exist and they are really beautiful, although a bit lazy, they prefer to lie down all day long. These rabbits are really big and heavy, I would like at some point to pet one, because to keep and feed it you have to have a big space and a lot of food. Besides I couldn't carry them, I would get very tired, they are quite heavy, so I think the best thing would be just to see them and pet them.

Types of Rabbits

Giant Flanders Rabbit

These are the giant rabbits that I have talked about before. They are very eye-catching and popular pets all over the world because of their large size, measuring up to 1 meter. These rabbits can weigh up to 18 kilos, but they usually weigh between 6 to 9 kilos. Their body is very long and very wide, unlike other breeds of rabbits. Its body is square in shape, with an arched back, muscular and powerful limbs and a round tail. The head is large and broad, presenting a notorious thick dewlap. Their ears are long and large and their eyes are dark.

This type of rabbits coexist very well with any other type of pets, as they are very docile, social and affectionate, they get along well with all their environment, but they are also quite introverted, so you have to be very patient with them until they get used to the environment. They need a lot of space to move around, even though they are a bit lazy, they prefer to spend the day lying down. These rabbits are therefore not suitable for busy and noisy homes, as they like to have a quiet environment. These rabbits originate from Belgium.

We have to be very careful with their health, since we can fall into the error that due to their size we should give them large quantities of food, we have to be conscious of how much they should eat since we can cause them health problems associated with overweight and obesity.

Rex Rabbit

These rabbits have two types, the standard, which are the largest rabbits, weighing up to 5 kilos and the mini rex rabbits which weigh between 1 to 3 kilos. These rabbits are characterized by a wavy or curly coat, something that is not very frequent, since it is a genetic mutation, but it has not been a cause for concern since it only affects the characteristics of the coat. However, not all rex rabbits have curly fur.

These rabbits are very active so you must have a large space in the house so they can jump without problems, they are also very sociable, so any person or other pet can play and share with him, this distinguishes it from other breeds is its friendly and affectionate character are calm and peaceful, being quite patient and tolerant.

Rex rabbits can present a certain tendency to develop some pathologies, one of them is the development of sores or wounds when their paws are in contact for a long time with hard surfaces, such as the metal bars of the cages, because their extremities do not have, as other rabbit breeds do, enough hair to act as a barrier.

Like the rest of the rabbits, this breed is sensitive to cold and above all to air currents and humidity, for this reason we should keep them in a ventilated but pleasant place, so that they do not get cold because they can develop pneumonia.

Belier Rabbit

The Belier rabbit is one of the rabbit breeds also well known for its appearance, as it looks really cute. Their ears are really big and droopy, which gives them a sweet and cute look. These rabbits are submissive, skittish and calm. These rabbits are very delicate, so you have to pay a lot of attention to them even though their care is simple and they are perfect as companions.

This breed of rabbits stands out for being really skittish and fearful, so they can suffer a lot from anxiety at any unfamiliar noise or commotion. The ideal for this breed of rabbits is that they live in a really quiet and peaceful environment, a place according to what this pet needs.

There are several types of Belier Rabbits, among these are the French Belier Rabbit, Dutch Belier, English Belier, German Belier, Lionhead Belier and the Kashmir Belier. The fundamental differences between them are the size (one is larger than the others) and the color of their fur, but in general the average weight of these animals is around 2 kilos.

• French Belier Rabbit

This rabbit comes from France and England; it is a cross between the English Belier and the giant of Flanders or the Mariposa. These rabbits were originally wild, but little by little they were domesticated by humans. The French Belier rabbit is a wide-bodied, robust rabbit, with firm musculature and strong bones. Its characteristic droopy ears reach the level of the cheeks, although in size they are smaller than those of the English Belier. Its weight oscillates between 3 and 4 kilos.

• English Belier Rabbit

Although its origin is unknown it is situated in the north of Africa which although it has high temperatures, the large ears allow the blood to cool down before. But it is called the English Belier rabbit because it was the English who first brought it to exhibition. The English Belier rabbit is a very calm rabbit and is an ideal pet. It has long ears which must be scrupulously cared for. It should also have short nails to avoid injury to its ears when scratching. Its weight oscillates between 4.5 kilos.

• Dutch Belier Rabbit

The Dutch Belier rabbit is a mutation between the Dutch Dwarf rabbit, the French Belier and the English Belier. This rabbit has a short neck and thick but short legs. It has an abundant and soft fur. It weighs between 1.5 and 2 kilos. It is the smallest Belier rabbit.

• German Belier Rabbit

The German Belier rabbit is a robust rabbit weighing between 2 and 3 kilos. The German Belier rabbit has a broad and flattened head. In addition to its droopy ears it has another characteristic which makes it unique among Belier rabbits, and that is that it has a sort of crown on its head just where its two ears meet. It has a long coat.

• Belier Cashmere Rabbit

The Kashmir Belier rabbit is also small, and usually weighs about 2 kilograms. It is similar to the Dutch Belier, but its fur is longer and extends over the whole body, being very soft.

• Belier Lionhead Rabbit

The Belier Lionhead Rabbit is also small since it does not usually weigh much more than 2 kilograms. It resembles the German Belier. The name Lionhead is due to the fact that it has tufts of hair covering its head as if it were the head of a lion. Its coat is very soft and woolly.

Florida white rabbits

These rabbits had not been bred for pets, but they have become so popular that many people have integrated them into their families, making this breed of rabbit very popular. These rabbits are one of the albino breeds of rabbits, being characteristic their white color and the red of their eyes. These rabbits have a medium size, where their weight is between 1 kilo to 3 kilos. Unlike the other breeds, their bones are very light and fragile, their neck is quite short and the rabbit is quite rounded. Its head is also rounded and small, what stands out the most are its large, rounded and thick ears, also highlights the red color of its eyes, which is typical of the lack of pigment of the albino breeds.

The fur of the Florida white rabbits is, as we can deduce, white, this color is snow white, not being possible to find them in any other color, because albinism prevents them from showing any other tone or color.

Their needs depend a lot on an adequate and nutritious diet, based on the consumption of fresh vegetables, which provide them with vitamins and minerals, they must also always have fresh water, because one of the great risks that lurk them is dehydration. Their coat is extremely easy to maintain, since only one or two weekly brushings will be enough. They are very adaptable to different environments and climatic conditions, however they suffer from very cold and humid environments, contracting respiratory diseases very easily in those conditions.
