Depression is a state of emotional pain and despair. People who have depression may feel sorrow, guilt, or loss. They may lose interest in or be unable to enjoy things they used to enjoy as well as seem paralyzed by negative thinking and less able to function and problems with sleeping or eating.

Depression is the illness most common among women, and it is associated with a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. People who often feel sad and hopeless are more likely to have depression than those who do not experience such feelings.

Major causes of depression

Brain chemistry

There are many different hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain that control mood, thought, memory and sensation. If your brain chemistry is not in balance, you could be prone to depression.

Genetics

Depression and anxiety disorders are highly genetic--in fact, about 50% to 60% of depression cases have a genetic component. Stressful life situations can trigger depression, but this is often followed by deeper issues with genetics.

Life events

Life events can lead someone to experience a mild depression or severe clinical depression. A major life event, such as the death of a spouse or parent, can trigger depression in people with depression who have not been able to deal with their grief before.

Medical conditions

There are a number of medical conditions that cause depression, including hypothyroidism and hypoglycemia. Some of the most common medical illnesses known to be linked to depression include diabetes, heart disease, asthma, obesity and alzheimer’s disease.

Some Symptoms of depression

  • Depression is a increasing all over the world and it affects millions of people .

    Some major symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness, and worthlessness and unhappy feelings.

  • Many people with depression have other health problems, including insomnia, appetite changes or thoughts about suicide or death.

  • Depression symptoms vary among individuals. A person may experience sadness, anxiety and anger combined with a decreased interest in hobbies, sex and family.

  • Other common depressive symptoms include changes in appetite, fatigue, insomnia and overeating.

Depression is increasing worldwide

Depression is increasing world wide and its percentage is increasing the most among men and women of age 30 to 44. It is being diagnosed as more than ever before for young people around the globe. The number of people with depression disease has reached 80 million in United States alone.

According to WHO, depression is increasing world wide and its percentage compares much higher than it was 20 years ago. Above 60% of people are depressed worldwide .

Treatment

  • Different methods are used to treat depression and such treatments includes

  • Psychotherapy is used for depression treatment.

  • Anti-Depressants are mostly used to reduce depression

  • Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) .These therapy is also used to treat depression

  • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and others.

  • Treatment for depression involves a combination of medications and therapy. effective treatments for acute type of depression is an antidepressant medication.Antidepressants take several weeks to start working but may take a few months to realize their full effect. Other therapies used to treat depression include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal psychotherapy and support groups.
