Incognito Mode - Is It Really Private?

7 23

When you connect into someone's WiFi, your internet history is visible to them. WiFi owners can see your recently opened websites and WiFi routers have logs so your history is not really hidden. Imagine having sites forbidden by your mom then she secretly stalks your internet history without even touching the phone itself, that my friend is really devastating. Well, most mothers don't really know about that or how to do that but we never know if they found out.

Ever since I saw how Google or Safari made this incognito mode, I was excited to see it, like finally, the kind of privacy we deserve. But is it really private like we know it is?

Since I am learning and currently a fan of programming and technology, I feel like it is my duty to know these things. I have seen a lot of vpn apps, even apps that offer privacy, but I don't really like them. Well, both Google and Safari have a reputation of their own, so I was on their side somehow when they released it. But it still doesn't make sense that you use your mobile data or WiFi and you go to these search engines' incognito mode, then you just anonymously go to any websites you want.

Is it really private?

Are you an anonymous user now when you use the incognito mode?

Can you go deeper in the web since you have privacy now?

The answer is NO.

Yes, your browsing history is not visible to your browser, but your internet service provider has the list of all website you visit. You can actually know that by reading the notes in the incognito mode, if you are fond of reading or just curious about the text in there. But for normal people, they really think that they have privacy when using that mode.

When you open the mode, it says:

Your activity might still be visible to:

  • Website you visit

  • Your employer or school

  • Your internet service provider

Your online privacy does not make a big impact on you.

Yes, they don't store cookies since you are not leaving any trace on the website. Your browsing history is not visible or available to any user that uses the same gadget you use.

Also, I found out that the mode doesn't provide any kind of protection to the user, other than the scrap browsing history. Malware can still get through actually.

Though there are ready available ones for you to be safe online. VPN is a good one, but I don't really use this much, but if you want to keep all of your online activities safe, this is a good choice. The Tor browser is also an amazing one since it offers a no-trace feature of your IP address by having a private browser.

So if you want to use the Incognito Mode for privacy, think again.

The internet is not safe as you think so. Never believe in words and eyes because they might lie in front of you.

Hmm.. it was really clear to understand in that note that it would still be visible to those. Users who really believes that it is really safe and private just don't simply understand that note.
