Shameless visit to Hilandar Monastery

3 67

The Hilandar Monastery was visited by only three Serbian rulers after the visit of Emperor Dusan in 1357.

The visits were made by the following rulers:

  • 1896. King Aleksandar Obrenovic,

  • 1910. King Petar Karadjordjevic

  • 1991. President of the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia, Slobodan Milosevic.

Hilandar - great Orthodox monastery in Greece

The first two visits to the Hilandar monks remained in the fondest memories. The arrival of Slobodan Milosevic is considered as the most indecent visit in history and a bad memory.

  • After visiting Corfu and touring the island of Vido, President Slobodan Milosevic landed a helicopter directly into the monastery garden unannounced. The helicopter landing completely destroyed all the vegetables the monks were growing. Since that day, nothing has ever been planted in that desecrated garden again. According to the testimony, most of the monks withdrew to their chambers on that occasion, because such arrival was considered humiliation and inappropriate behavior. On this occasion, the bells did not ring as they had in the two previous visits.

  • Eyewitnesses say that the president greeted abbot Pajsije with the words "Hello, comrade", which is very rude. The president stayed in the monastery for about two hours, he did not follow the religious customs prescribed by the Orthodox faith.

  • In addition to to the inappropriate behavior of the president, the abbot Pajsije presented the President with a Bible and advised him to rule according to this book in order for success. This act only shows the kindness and selflessness of the people from the monastery.

Slobodan Milosevic

Slobodan Milosevic was born in 1941 in Serbia. He was a lawyer, politician, president of the League of Communists of Serbia, and president of Serbia in the period from 1910-2000. The rule was authoritarian, he took part in the wars that took place on the territory of Yugoslavia. In 2001, he was arrested and extradited to The Hague. He did not receive a verdict, he died in 2006.

That is terrible to destroy garden of the monks they planted. Basic rules aren't respected. It is forbidden for woman to step on that holly land too. Thank you for this knowledge you share.
