Can you over-meditate??

Meditation is a state just as waking or sleeping is a state.

Can we sleep too much? Yes. Can we stay awake too long? Yes.

I feel that meditating early in the morning, starting with 15 or 20 minutes and eventually getting to one hour is good.

In the practice I do, there is another process called cleaning or evening rejuvenation which is another 15 to 30 minutes at the end of the day.

That is about an hour and a half a day.

Most people will think that is crazy!

Yes, you are right. It will seem crazy at first but if you stick with it you will become a very content crazy person! You will be crazy about meditation and it will be the very best part of your day.

If you are a beginner, take it a little at a time. Just know that it will take about 10 to 15 minutes just for the mind to settle down at first. Then you get into the meditative state. Try to stay in that state a little longer each day.

Now, if you are really into this meditation business, you most certainly can meditate more times in a day, however, limit your meditation to an hour at the most in one sitting. Then take a break, walk a bit or stretch. Then you can meditate again.

More is not better when it comes to meditation. It is better to practice maintaining that balanced state throughout your work or school day. This is the long term objective anyway - to eventually be in a meditative state of mind in all your conscious activities.

Here is a very simple practice to try:

Morning (or anytime):

Sit comfortably and relax.

Bring your awareness to your heart.

Make the thought that you are meditating on the source of light already present in the heart.

Feel it is attracting you inward.

If thoughts come - don't struggle with them. Gently return your awareness to the source of light in the heart and feel it is attracting you inwards.

You don't have to imagine light. Just wait to feel what is there.

Evening Cleaning of Impressions:

Sit comfortably and relax.

Make a determined thought just once that all the impressions from the days experiences are leaving you.

They are going out the back from the top of the head to the tailbone, in the form of smoke or vapor.

Then simply keep imagining the vapor leaving out the back for about 10 to 15 minutes.

You should feel a shift or settling. Gently shift your thought and feel a current of purity is descending into your heart filling it up. Do this for a few minutes.

Remember, meditation isn't an extra job we're adding to our day - it will become the best time of day, something we can't wait to do.

Even if you can start with 5 or 10 minutes - try to do it each day, it will make a difference.
