Syed Nazrul Islam is the first caretaker President of Bangladesh.Syed Nazrul Islam was born in Kishoreganj.He obtained his MA degree in History from Dhaka University. He was one of the members of the Rashtrabhasha Sangram Parishad in 1948. In 1949 he joined the Pakistan Central Superior Service and got a job in the tax department.But he quit his job in 1951 to pursue a career in politics and took up teaching at Mymensingh Anandamohan College.Then in 1953 he passed law and started law business in Mymensingh court.He also joined the Awami League.

In 1956 he became the president of Mymensingh Awami League. As Bangabandhu was imprisoned, he served as the party's central senior vice-president from May 8, 1986 to February 21, 1989. In April 1971, in the absence of Bangabandhu, Mujibnagar became the caretaker President of the government. He was the Minister of Industries of Bangladesh from 12 January 1972 to 24 January 1975.

He was brutally killed by some misguided army personnel while he was imprisoned in Dhaka Central Jail on 3 November 1975. He is one of the four national leaders.
