Suhrawardy is called the son of democracy. He was born in September 1892 in Midnapore, West Bengal. His father was Sir Zahid Chowdhury, a famous judge of the kalkata High Court and his mother's name was Khojenta Akhtar Banu.
He first obtained a BSc degree in Mathematics from St. Xavier's College, kalkata.After studying in Oxford and London, he started a law business in kalkata.In his early life he was involved in the labor movement in kalkata.When Chittaranjan Das was the mayor of kalkata, he was the deputy mayor. In 1925 he became a member of the Bengal Management Council. He joined the Muslim League in 1936. He was a minister in the cabinet of Fazlul Huq (1937-41) and in the cabinet of Khwaja Nazimuddin (1943-45). He was the Chief Minister of Undivided Bengal from 1946 to 1947. In 1947 he was elected a member of the Pakistan Constituent Assembly. But even after partition, he retained his Indian citizenship and lost his membership of the Constituent Assembly in 1948. He moved to Pakistan in 1949 and played a role in the formation of the Awami Muslim League. He was one of the main organizers of the United Front formed in 1954. He became the Union Minister in 1954-55 (Ministry of Talents).
He was elected a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1955 and a member of the Jatiya Sangsad in 1956. He then served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1956 to 1957. When Ayub Khan imposed martial law, he was charged under the EBDO Act under martial law. He was arrested by the Ayub government just before the promulgation of the 1962 constitution. But only twenty days later he was released. He played a strong role in the formation of the NDF. He died in 1963 at a hotel in Beirut, Lebanon.
