This is a story my Christian religious knowledge C.R.K teacher told us while we were still in primary school.
The topic we had that day was covetousness, so he told us this story so we could learn from it.
Covetousness
There was a boy named Daniel, he was from a rich family. Daniel is known for his act of selfishness and greediness.
He is who we call Oliver twist. He wants all what comes his way.
Despite being a rich man's son, he was never contented. In school, during break time Daniel would finish his food and still beg out of other pupils food, even if it is just to have a spoon. Sometimes he steals their food behind their back.
His parents gives him whatever he needs. Daniel would go home and lie to his parents they were told to bring money for some Practical in school and his parents will give him without hesitation. Whereas they weren't told to bring any money, the practicals were free.
In their second term of being In primary six cm, a new female student Joined their class. Everyone thought Daniel would have changed, but he hadn't. The second day the girl joined the school, Daniel stole her food when everyone was outside Playing during sport period.
After sports, they rang the bell for break and the girl went to take her food, on getting there she realized the food only remained a small portion. "Who stole my food" she shouted. The whole class denied including Daniel. The girl cried throughout that day.
It was after closing time the girl overheard Daniel talking to his friends that he was the one that stole the girl's food. The girl shook her head and went home. When she got home, she told her Father about what happened in school. Meanwhile the girl's father was an herbalist, he got angry when he heard what they did to his daughter. So he told her he would put a charm in the food she would take to school the following day.
The following day, the girl's father did as he said. He placed a charm in a plate of rice and kept it in his daughter's bag. He told her not to eat out of the food. On getting to school the girl kept her bag behind the class as usual. Break time, the girl went out to play with other classmates but Daniel stood behind pretending to be reading. When the class was empty, he walked to the girl's bag, he took her food and ate out of it. After the break time, the girl came in and saw that the food has decreased. She kept mute.
Till the school closed for that day, nothing happened to Daniel, but immediately he got home his stomach began to swell. His parents rushed him to hospital. On getting to the hospital, the doctor told them it wasn't a medical problem. Then Daniel's mother asked him what he ate in school. The pain was too much for Daniel to bear, he confessed that he stole a girl's food. Immediately, his father knew that was where the swollen stomach was from. They took him to the car and drove to the girl's house. They pleaded to the girl's father.
He gave him a water to drink, and his stomach came down to it's normal way and he was able to walk again.
Daniel and his parents began to thank the Man.
The man said. "Don't thank me, you should teach your child to be contented with whatever he has. Stealing is not good for a small child like him"
Ever since that day, Daniel never begged for food in school neither did he take what does not belongs to him.
Lesson: learn to be contented with whatever you have. Lack of contentment leads to destruction.
It's good to be contented
