What Is Interpersonal Relationship
The concept of interpersonal relationship involves social associations, connections, or affiliations between two or more people. Interpersonal relationships vary in their degree of intimacy or self-disclosure, but also in their duration, in their reciprocity, and in their power distribution, to name only a few dimensions.
Close relationships are sometimes called interpersonal relationships. The closest relationships are most often found with family and a small circle of best friends. Interpersonal relationships require the most effort to nurture and maintain. These are also the relationships that give you the most joy and satisfaction.
An interpersonal relationship is an association between two or more people that may range from fleeting to enduring. This association may be based on inference, love, solidarity, regular business interactions, or some other type of social commitment.
Interpersonal relationships are formed in the context of social, cultural, and other influences. The context can vary from family or kinship relations, friendship, marriage, relations with associates, work, clubs, neighborhoods, and places of worship. They may be regulated by law, custom, or mutual agreement, and are the basis of social groups and society as a whole.
A very common and simplest way to define what an interpersonal relationship is, aside from the long statement is the strong connections we feel with those closest to us. It could be with friends, colleagues, family members, or even romantic partners. And these relationships are built on mutual respect, trust, and loyalty and they can provide us with support, care, and even love.
An interpersonal relationship is something that everyone experiences and it's not something which other people are biased. It's an everyday thing. As we work with people, relate with them, automatically we are forming a relationship with them. We meet people every day and if not every day, from time to time in our lives, we keep meeting people and forming a bond with them. And this is what interpersonal relationship is, from the moment you are close to a person or some group of people, a bond is generated which for some, could last a lifetime.
Types Of Interpersonal Relationship
As we know that relationships are of different types, the same it is with interpersonal relationships. We don’t relate to everyone the same way, we relate with people differently and the bonds and relationships we have with all those people are different and of different stage.
So we will look at the different types or kinds of interpersonal relationships that we have.
FAMILY
The first and most important bond or relationship we have is our family. We don’t choose this relationship, it was given to us right from the first day we arrived on earth.
It is the most precious of them all and even though the family has their differences in regards to everything surrounding them, it is still the most important relationship ever.
Some family members have individual differences, but they are bonded in love, care. They support one another and always have one another’s back.
Family can include our parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, caregivers, and guardians. These are the first relationships we ever form. We often have close ties to family members. These bonds can last a lifetime. Sometimes we hold different values or ideals than family members do. And that’s OK! But it’s super important to maintain open and respectful communication. In some cases, personal differences can’t be overcome and the interpersonal relationships with family members might become strained or non-existent.
FRIENDSHIP
We all know the bible verse that says that some friends stick closer than a brother. That is what it feels when you meet the right kind of friends with like minds. The bond of friendship is one that should never be underestimated and it's something great.
Unlike a family bond or relationship, friendship is a bond in which you decide and choose for yourself. Before you are closely bonded to a person or with some group of person, it must have been your decision to do so and even if the bonding grew unconsciously, you will realize with time if its healthy to stay in it or rather if it's better to disconnect from it or leave.
Friendship is a complex interpersonal relationship. Complex in the sense that it cannot be explained or there is no formula for it since we meet different kinds of people and friends throughout your lifetime.
ROMANTIC
This type of interpersonal relationship is defined in terms of the concepts of passion, intimacy, and commitment. Sometimes the mutual attraction evolves from “I like you” to “I love you”. Though in most cases this kind of relationship happens automatically without any bond of friendship while some would start from a normal bond of friendship before developing into a romantic relationship.
There are distinctive differences between friendship and romantic relationships. The love you have for your friends or how you feel for them differs and varies with that of romantic partners. You can totally love your friends but you aren’t in love with them, whereas it's not the same for anyone you are sexually or romantically attached to.
WORK
Many people don’t often form any kind of interpersonal relationship in their place of work because they already configured their mind to be on the lookout for business and work and nothing else. Some are stuck with the minding my business slogan. They aren’t loose to form any bond with their coworkers.
But on the other hand, some are open and free-minded, they like associating and correlating with other people, and with time, they form a mutual relationship and a strong bond. You may see your coworkers more than you see your own family, so it’s normal to form strong bonds with your work peeps. Your shared experiences can create relationships that impact the workplace dynamic.
We don’t always agree with colleagues, even if they’re a friend, but it’s important to maintain respectful communication to ensure both work and friendship are valued.
