Let’s explore how HTML, CSS, and JS interact together to show up on the web.

TL;DR

What is HTML

What is CSS

HTML + CSS = Web 1.0

What is JS

HTML + CSS + JS = Web 2.0

What is Web3

Web2 + Crypto Stuffs = Web3

What is HTML

HTML or HyperText Markup Language is a code language that provides a structure to the website. It is an instruction language to tell what a website is supposed to look like. If you recall that your computer is a client who tries to request service to the remote server that once you type the website address, the server will go through the file cabinets to find HTML files that link to the address you are researching to provide to you.

What is CSS

CSS or Cascading Style Sheets is a style sheet language that provides HTML styles and layout. It guides HTML in the style that you want it to become and position information in a way that helps readers to enjoy their readings.

For example, you may tell how the text color will be, what the size of the text will look like, and what font of the text you choose from.

HTML + CSS = Web 1.0

If you have HTML and CSS, you got Web 1.0. It is a static website that is similar to a newspaper to present information on the internet. In Web 1.0, you can only read information from the website that programmers provided.

What is JS

JS or JavaScript is a programming language on the client-side to make the website interactive. It allows users to interact with the website and communicate with others. The idea of Web 2.0 was born. Users not only can read the website, but they can also write their feedback and interact with others on the website in different locations.

HTML + CSS + JS = Web 2.0

Before the 2000s, the website was only composed of text, images, and links. It was static. After the 2000s, the dynamic user experience that can respond to users' input, emphasizing user-generated content and social sharing created a new way of web surfing a.k.a Web 2.0.

Users can generate their own content and share it with others. blogging, social media, online learning platforms, and many more ideas that generate through Web 2.0.

What is Web3

So what is Web3 then? Some said Web3 is decentralized that runs on the blockchain where people can own their own data or digital assets like NFTs. it is a permissionless, trustless place with native payments embedded. It sounds very fairytale and too good to be true.

Or perhaps, Web3 is just a rebranding of crypto. An idea that is against the Web2 tech giants who profit from people’s misery through social media engagement.

Web2 + Crypto Stuffs = Web3

Whatever people described the ownership economy, what does that really mean in programming anyway. From a programming perspective, it is an integration of Web2 into the blockchain and smart contract programming. That is about it from the current technology trend. Web3 has limitations and a master of Web2 is necessary to continue developing skills in Web3.

But, it does not stop here. There are many potentials of Web3 that are developing daily and potentially will disrupt the Web2 ecosystem.

In conclusion

Now you learn what Web3 actually is. You can start learning more to improve your skills.

The next topic I will touch on is what programming really is.

Programming has always been something I had passion for and I have learnt a lot from this article and the ones before, but I have a question . Are HTML and CSS programming languages?
