Mother! - A Movie Review

I love watching movies and there are lots of movies I can suggest to you guys. one of those is 'Mother!'. Well, if you are looking for a movie that has deep meaning in it, this is one of the best movie I can recommend. Google said that its genre is horror/thriller but for me, it has nothing to do with ghost or something like that. I think this movie is sending message to us about the horror that we've done to mother earth. Well maybe that explains why it is considered as horror/thriller by google. By the way, this review contains a lot of spoiler so if you are a type of "not into spoiling thingy" just watch the movie and you can read this review again once you're done so we can share if we have the same thoughts about it.

The main characters are Jennifer Lawrence as mother, probably stands for 'mother earth' and Javier Bardem as I believe, he's portraying God. I think the writer did not use names for the characters, maybe to give a spice of mystery in the story so I will be calling them as 'He' and 'Mother' until the end of this review . In this movie, there are lots of symbols or signs that the writer and the director himself, Darren Aronofsky used. There was this crystal thing that the male lead character treasures the most which represents so many things. It could be the forbidden fruit because there is a part of this movie when 'mother' mentioned to the visitors that 'He' doesn't want anyone to go to his room and to touch the said crystal which was of course they violated, the same way how Eve and Adam violated the 'rule' in the bible, or maybe it represents his heart or symbolism of his love because it will play a big role in the end of the movie like, it is where it all started.

The setting of the story is inside their house that maybe represents the 'paradise' and 'mother' alone is renovating it since 'He' is fixated to what 'He' is writing. Yes, 'He' is a writer, and about the writing, it is for you to figure it out what it is once you decided to watch the movie on your own. In the house there are also representations like walls pulsating or breathing. There is also a scene in which 'He' let a couple enter the house without 'Mother' knowing, they touched the crystal and did sex, and this couple invited their 2 sons that are fighting over a property and started ruining things in some part of the house and disrespecting it until the other son was killed by the other and the killed son's blood stained the floor of the house. Familiar right? So biblical.

Another situation you'll see in the middle of the movie is invasion of kin, friends and who-knows-who-they-are in the house. You'll see war, killings, and it seems that people are divided with different religions, rituals and still 'He' accepted them in his house. This people ruined everything, destroyed the walls, they put barriers, they painted and vandalized every corner of the house and they even wanted to forcefully enter the 'forbidden' room. There is also a representation of 'Christ' which what made 'Mother' also represents 'Mother Mary' since she's the one who gave birth to this boy. They were given the privilege to see the new born baby and ended up eating it like 'the body of Christ', of course 'Mother Mary' is not happy about it and hysterically fighting over them to have her son back but in the end, she was humiliated.

At the end of the movie, everything was gone and there is another version of 'Mother' because the old one was ruined by people so she decided to burn herself and the house down. I am seeing some wild fires happening to the Earth related to this part and of course, 'He' was not burned, He is God remember? So he rebuilt everything using that crystal from the chest of 'Mother' and created a new version of everything. So in addition, that crystal could also be a representation of something like a treaty or a covenant and that is why 'He' is protecting it.

Take note, it all happened inside the house and I know that there are still lots of things that you will discover once you watch this movie. Watching it will be able to help us to be conscious on what is happening in our society and because of what we did, what we are doing and what we are going to do in the future will reflect to the world that we are living in and the results, it is bouncing back to us.
