The doorbell was broken. It took her at least five minutes to be aware of the fact she didn't hear the sound. He should be home he always was. She knocked on the door. Called his name through the slot in it but it remained silent. The curtains of the windows at the front were closed. She banged on them without any result.
It only took her eight minutes to walk around the block. The back door could be open. She counted the houses like she always did to be sure she entered the right gate. Old habits die hard.

At that time as he called her, he panicked, she wasn't in the mood to listen to him again, not again. He totally lost his vision, grip on reality, life. After, after...
She didn't want to think back on all that had happened. His sadness, his bad luck while her new life just started. She knew she hadn't been a great friend during the past years...

"Not a great sister either."

"I am here now", she whispered as she found her way through the garden. It looked more like a jungle was he still alive? What if she was strolling over someone else's property? She hesitated, stood still, and listened. Was anyone following her? She shivered as a cold breeze blew her way.

"Don't be such a coward, you traveled the world and you are just delivering a present. You rang, knocked, and are only heading to the back door because he needs you."

"Are you sure he still needs you?" The voice in her hand sounded cold.

No, she wasn't sure but the neighbor said... both neighbors she spoke to said, she corrected herself, he was home. He never left the house.

Those neighbors living across the street knew. They always stayed home as well. They kept an eye on everyone and everything.

"Not everyone... They never had kept an eye at that time... They couldn't tell the police anything."

There he was. He hung in a chair that was faced to the window. She stared at him but he didn't seem to recognize her although his eyes were open.

The back wasn't locked and a few minutes later she stood behind him. Carefully she touched his shoulder.

"Jim? I am back. I brought you a present."

She put the small box on his lap.

"I brought you what you like most. It's a sea urchin just like you wanted..."

"Jim?"

He didn't move. Showed no interest, just kept holding tight to a boot. It was a child's boot he held close to his heart. She recognized it and knew nothing had changed. He didn't come over it and still waited for the child's return. It had been long ago and that child... Even if she was still alive there was hardly a chance it would find it's way home.

That explains it. I thought the concept was slightly related to that of Chocolate. Is the man dead or...

Chocolate the film? I don't think that one was about a child being kidnapped and a society ignoring the fact the child ever existed or?

I know you refer to that story but I do not understand which film you have in mind. If it's not chocolate, it's a candy, rabbits or a balloon...

It's most likely the balloon.

I wouldn'tho for a balloon although my last piece of chocolate tasted disgusting. ☹ I take the rabbit or a kitten.
