The End of the Empire
It's great to be at the top,
the hare said while he spread his arms in an attempt to embrace what he saw.
I am the best, the greatest of all and this, the entire world will be mine, mine, mine. This all will be my nest.
Make a note of that, said Hare to Rabbit who had followed the mighty Z, the last Hare of the alphabet to the top, not because he liked him but because it was the only way to keep the hare off his back.
It's noted the tiny white rabbit said, you can trust me, once back the word will be spread. You know, Your Highness how fast we rabbits work.
The hare didn't show much interest in the spoken word since what is expected would never be rejected by rabbit and his stupid clan. They were his white slaves, not more than spoiled pets, a lower breed not able to survive without Hare's help who was familiar with the threats of the wildlife. Once he no longer needed these stupid soldiers he would feed them to the hyenas.
This all is my kingdom, he thought, and soon every mighty one in Animal world will fall.
They will fight each other instead of me and will not be able to see what goes on for real. So far my plan worked perfectly.
In this empire of mine is no room for those who won't bow, obey and appreciate me, besides we are with too many already.
Once they have figured it out, it will be too late, no way I go back to the old me, I will teach those bullies how to kneel.
Standing upright on his hind legs** Hare looked majestic and if not him it was his impressive shadow that seemed to cover the entire valley.
No animal in the world knew how the once cowardly hare had managed to manipulate them all and take control.
As time passed by the leaders got used to giving in to the demands of the one who had never achieved anything except for continued complaining about being bullied in the far past without any wrongdoing from his side.
Perhaps Hare was so lucky to have time at his hand, his cowardly lifestyle had saved him from early death, or the struggle to survive and the lack of memory of better times had made the animals forget how great and fear-free their life once had been.
Whatever had caused it they didn't see the light at the end of the tunnel, a small rat that had never set foot outside let alone seen the daylight.
All rats gathered by midnight
It wasn't the next conspiracy theory they wanted to fight but the Plague that had taken all joy out of life.
All against one, and one against all, the rodents yelled as they overwhelmed the hare who had just fallen asleep and happily dreamed of ruling an empty world.
He even hopped in his sleep but couldn't show his teeth like the wolves who hadn't taken Hare Z's news very lightly.
It only took a few seconds and Hare was gone. It was the end of the empire he had never really run, all animals had learned a lesson and lived happily forever and ever.
