Sick trees

15 39

If you walk from the train station to the bus station you have two options. You walk by the road or through a small "park". The park is mainly grass and trees. Trees growing very close to each other. Their only way to grow is up in the sky.

While taking the road I noticed some strange trees. It might be a Platanus orientalis but most likely it is not but a new, combination breed from trees of the same family.

The photo makes the "park" look way better as it in reality is. This is the only spot where those trees have some room.

What happened to those trees.

Of many, the tops are cut off and they have hardly any leaves. This tree can easily grow 30 meters high and is therefore great for parks and large gardens.

Tumors are not healthy.

This tree is famous because it literally grows out of its skin. This gives the trunk its strange color but all those tumors are no part of this tree. They do remind me of an oak I had at the back of my garden. It suffered from cancer caused by radiation.

Shadow of leaves on the trunk.

It makes one wonder what causes these tumors. Is it the soil or in the air. Count on it if trees have it we humans catch it too.

The trees are injured and a fungus eats them.

And humans? They use the injuries as their trash can.

It is hard to tell if it is nature we are watching at. Nature or harmed nature.

As I was told by a true expert of the Wageningen University the oak in my garden had cancer (same to other trees at that place). He would investigate it since "Gelredome" (city of Arnhem)and it's transmission towers and more are nearby just like a hundred's of years old Platanus suffering from tumors as well.

My first thought after the oak was cut down: Who will absorb all this radiation now and where will the toxic go the cut-down tree sets free?

I used PictureThis (see play store) to find out more about this kind of tree.

That is the question and if mother Nature has it for sure this park is not a healthy place to be. Most likely the whole area is not. Strange is no one cares. I guess we see it too frequently to wonder what's wrong or perhaps see it as art?

I hope those with more power will do something. At least the guy who took care of my oak does. He gives lectures about trees and this sick one became a study. I don't know how to fight this but there's a reason why those tumors are so big. In most cases, they have the size of a marble or tennis ball. Thanks for your comment.

They are beautiful trees but they are already dying of some disease. It saddens me that with so much vegetation from the root it is dying!

It's mostly bacteria and virus that infect trees too, they're like us humans, after all. But sad that they don't get the same treatment as humans. It could also be the carcinogens humans dump in the soil and eventually gets absorbed by the trees
