Needed

It's such a lovely day,

he mused as he watched the stray dog shuffle past his window. On impulse, he tapped the pencil against it because the distance between his arm and the glass was too far for him to touch.

Surprised, the animal looked up, what was it that guy wanted? He was not used to anyone trying to get its attention but stones thrown at him, being kicked or hit with a stick, just like recently when he was digging for a bone in a flower bed. The animal could still feel the boot on his ass and cringed at the thought.

Once again the man tapped the glass to alert the skinny little animal. It looked miserable but nevertheless stood still. He got up on his knees with difficulty and reached for the window.

Don't leave, he begged, please don't leave, stay with me.

Hesitantly, the animal took a step forward. What was the fellow at the window frame doing?

I have a banana, would you like to have it?

With difficulty, he opened the window a bit and pushed the piece of fruit outside. Here old buddy this is for you. Go ahead, feel free to grab it.

Tired, he fell back on the bed unable to see if the dog had taken the treat.

Come back tomorrow, he whispered, I'll give you a part of my food again. I'll save it for you, see you soon. Wearily, he closed his eyes and thought about the old stray dog who, just like him, was not so favourite.

It was worth the try, who knows, they would even become friends for life.
