"They are impressionable. Catch their minds at.."
He smiled. Suddenly remembered how she had always read out loud. For some reason, it was not possible for her to read in silence. He never cared but their father had hated it. It had even driven him mad. As she became older she hid as soon as he came home to avoid the endless fights. Fights about nothing. She couldn't think without reading out loud and he yelled at her because her reading stopped him from thinking. Thinking? The only one and thing he thought about was himself. A man with a big ego and a big belly. "There's no need for a girl to read. You don't learn cooking out of books." His sneering remarks were as annoying as his jokes. Jokes which only made him laugh out loud.
Fidelo himself rode out to escort them on the last part of the road.
He didn't mind showing the way although he was the highest in rank and should have stayed at the headquarter. Life at the office was too much for him at times and this case sounded interesting enough to pay the sergeant a visit at his home. He remembered the case as soon as the woman called him just like the sergeant's face and behavior. A policeman only willing to act if it was in his own interest which was closing each case as soon as possible. Frequently not even a report was made and notes ended up in the archive. "Archive" was how he called the trash bin. It took him years to fight the cps (corrupt personal system) at the bureau, he had made enemies and some friends but it felt as if right was at his side. The man had said nothing while she spoke but he had seen what it had done to him. There was no reason to believe they made it up. Not one single note was left about that fatal day. With their help, he had made a new file, and questioning the dirty cop wasn't something he would let them do alone. The old fox won't win, not this time. No matter if the girl is still alive I'll find her and make sure they get the answers they deserve.
"Sir, do you remember me and my brother?"
The man in the rocking chair peered at her with a dirty look at his face.
"Look who we have here, the drunk liar and the lying bitch. Didn't I tell you to never show your face again?"
Same, nasty guy, Fidelo thought, if this case wouldn't be that heartbreaking I can imagine people give up on their cases. It's no fun to deal with the police. How on earth could that monster ever reach such a high position? He didn't seem to suffer from his early pension, was well taken care of servants included.
"The case is reopened," she said with a calm voice ignoring the hostility she was welcomed with. "Let me tell you what we have so far. After that, you can give your opinion and add the information you have or any thought you like to share with us."
She opened the file, took a deep breath.
"Why don't I share my opinion now" he hissed while raising out of his chair faster as anyone had counted on. Before she knew his baseball bat landed at her mouth. That mouth that refused to shut up. She didn't falter nor cried just looked at the man, with her face bloody beneath her nose.
"Sir, you are under arrest," Fidelo said "you..."
"Hold on, sit down, and let me read the file. It took long enough."
