The thing is, one really really want to cry when being challenged. Yet, one wants to know the truth more than the tears of defending one's position. Both shed tears; the former, tears of defense; the latter, tears of joy...

In Writing To Learn, William Zinsser said that writing is having a clear thought, and that thought translates into words. A revise of the writing is an act of rethinking, probably. Then, there are fiction writers with some plan, then he wrote them, but to a point he had no control over the plot anymore; for what uncovers like flower blossoms, even the author can only watch it uncover and blossom. This is probably clear thinking. And with high probability, clear writing.
