Španci dadoše toj neobičnoj biljci ime - faholes. Kasnije Talijani dobiše od Španaca tu biljku i malo izvrnuše u talijanski naziv - fađoli. Stiže biljčica i preko Jadrana, u Dubrovnik i Dalmaciju, pa fađoli postade - fažol. Ukusno i omiljeno zrnato povrće dođe zatim do Zagreba, tamo fažol dobi ime - božul, božulj. Konačno božulj dospije u Srbiju i postade - pasulj.
